Is the Henneke system of body condition scoring what is being used? TIA!
Yes, nothing under 3 or over 8.
Thanks Lisa!
The method seems slightly subjective. I must have missed the memo about arriving at BCS’s or maybe it was discussed at the convention.
It is a bit subjective, but so will any system other than(maybe) height/ mass ratio, but even then that doesn’t account for different builds. Maybe body fat calculations based off of hyrdostatic weighing would be 100% accurate ? Of course, then we would need to have tanks and very specialized equipment at every ride, which wouldn’t exactly be feasible. ( :
I like the Henneke system as it is pretty specific about different sections of the horse. Also, a BCS between 3-8 pretty much means(at least in my understanding, proposal is no 2 horses and no 9 horses) the horse is not a starved rack of bones or so fat it jiggles while trotting.
in case any wants more info about the Henneke system, these explain it pretty well( warning, sad pictures of horses at low end of scale)
