I am entertaining buying a Boeckmann as I want to downsize in towing vehicle and I need a lighter trailer. My current dilemma is deciding which model is most applicable to my needs! I have narrowed it down to a few models: Duo R, Champion R, and the Comfort. If I do not go with one of those three I will be looking at a Portax model. I have 2 TBs, with the larger of the two topping out at 16.3-17 when she is done growing. The other is a modest 15.3-16 hands. I will mostly be towing within an hour or two range with less than 3 shows a year being closer to 4 hours away. I am also looking to move from the midwest to the West Coast in the next few years so the new trailer would need to be able to make that haul (not regularly by ANY means). Mostly I will be taking one horse trail riding or to a local show. Please share any pictures and opinions please! I have not seen any in person as I am 1500+ miles from any dealer.
I have a Portax K, but I have ponies. I would think that with something 16.3/17h you would be looking only at the “big” models. The Big Champion, Big Master, or Portax. The smaller models max out at 17h and, having been inside one, there would not be a ton of room for a 17 hander in one of them.
So given the list you provided and the size of your largest horse, I would say either Big Champion or Portax. When I bought mine, the price difference to go up to the Portax and get the front ramp and full escape door was not that large so I bought one. I don’t know current pricing so ymmv, a current look tells me this might not be the case anymore and there’s a substantial price difference. On the Portax you also get the WCFPlus suspension and the full convertible rear door. I wanted all that so I sprung for it.
If you’re buying without ever seeing one - I would go for a “big” model and I think the least expensive of those is the Big Champion.
That was kind of what I was wondering. Height is not a concern as they are all the same height I believe, but it seemed like the nose to tail length was short looking with the Duo, Champion, and Comfort.
I think the Big Champion and the Portax are within $2,000 of each other so not a HUGE jump but not a few hundred bucks either.
Maybe I will look into the Portax E and Portax K a little more. I think the K might lend itself a bit more head room as the side ramp adds overall length typically?
The K is a few inches longer in the head room to make room for the ramp. There is now also an LSK model that has a full door next to the ramp, as well as a dressing room model. These are not cheap. But they exist. I have a Knand the front ramp is so worth it. Makes it so mug easier to handle horses when you are not backing them off and mine trailer much better when they know they don’t have to back off.
As an update to this thread, I spoke to the US dealer for these, traveled lane, about an unrelated item earlier this week and we discussed this - because of the price increases and uncertainty about tariffs they have not brought any in yet this year. They have some 2017 inventory but it looks like they will only be bringing them in at customer request from Canadian inventory due to pricing uncertainty. They are expecting prices to go up, possibly higher than the market will bear.
