Bog spavin

Hello everyone, I have a 25 year old arab mare that I pulled from a kill pen in Texas June 1st. She had been neglected for quite some time, super thin. She was full of infection that has been treated and she is doing fairly well now…eating and gaining weight. Tonight I noticed what appears to be a bog spavin on her inside left hock. Because it’s a holiday weekend I know my vet won’t answer her texts about treatment. I have paste bute and banamine.
WWYD??
Thanks,
Marti

I understand bog spavin to be a painless joint fluid swelling like a wind puff in the fetlock. There’s no point and some risk in giving painkillers if a horse is not in pain or lame. There’s not much to do with these puffs, just monitor. I would watch hoof trim balance as this can exacerbate joint puffs IME.

Today the swelling is almost gone, she has a hard time getting up after laying down maybe she did something in the pasture to irritate it. IDK. Thanks for the response.

Great information. Thank you!
