Bombproof horse suddenly extremely spooky and tense.

So a couple of weeks ago I was riding my 20yo, bombproof gelding around our neighborhood no problem. He was very calm and sure of himself. The next day he spooked at everything from the moment I lead him out of the barn, to the moment I got out of the saddle. I thought it wasn’t a big deal, all horses have their off days. But that wasn’t it. The next day he acted just as spooky and nervous about absolutely everything. It has been continuously getting worse and for the past couple of days he has even been bolting and bucking at our simple rides around the house. I am baffled at how much his whole demeanor has changed in less than a month. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

At a guess I’d say something wrong with his vision or hearing, or even both. Vision problems are more likely to come on very suddenly (certain types, anyway).

Lyme, ulcers, so many things. Be careful/safe and I’d suggest bloodwork from vet to start. Good luck!

Thank you guys for the responses! I will look into the things y’all suggested.

I would be worried that some health issue has suddenly changed. I’d be going to the vet for a neuro exam, as well as other things mentioned (like Lyme).

I agree, such a sudden shift in behavior makes me think a physical problem came up. Have your vet out ASAP!

for sure, check for lyme
