Bone bruise....Stall rest or limited turnout?

My 5 yr old recently OTTB has a bone bruise in his right fetlock, which we believe he acquired after leaving the track. He has been on stall rest for the last 3 weeks with only maybe 2hrs of turnout at a time in the indoor arena every three days or so. He hasn’t improved much, and the vet who saw him recommended strict stall rest for the next three weeks. We are putting rubber mats in his stall, however, he has a terrible habit of pawing and I’m concerned that by keeping him on stall rest he is causing more stress to the joint.

Does anyone have experience with deep bone bruises and their treatment? What worked for you, stall rest vs. paddock turnout (with no riding)?

My mare had this with back coffin bone bruise… I recommend “kicking chains” with all my heart. The don’t hurt, you only need them on one foot to get the idea, and they work!
