Book on grid exercises

What is the best book on doing grid exercises? Thanks

Jimmy Wofford has a wonderful book called “Modern Gymnastics”. It’s fabulous and has lots of grid exercises.

There’s also 101 Jumping Exercises which is great and has lots of grids. It also explains how to set everything up.

The 101 jumping exercises was written by Olympic course designer Linda Allen. It’s a keeper for sure.

And also our own Weatherford. It’s an excellent book; I highly recommend it.

This book is very tricky to find. Up in Canada anyways.
I have heard great things.

I dont mind 101 Jumping but it doesn’t give enough description about how and why it works for the horse. I want to understand.

I did, however, enjoy Systemactic Jumping for Horses and The Complete Guide to Hunter Seat training, Showing and Judging: on the flat and over fences by Anna Jane White-Mullen.

I used to know Linda Allen, and have the Anna Jane-Mullen book, but have not looked inside the covers for years. Tosca Kochen on the front cover is a local rider. I’ll search out the 101 exercises…

As far as I am concerned grid jumping is so good for horses it is a pity it is not a bigger part of a horse’s education. My event horse did them up to 4’ - and hardly ever jumped in the ring over a course except when on the job. He went to Intermediate.

My copy of 101 Jumping Exercises was pilfered from me. I’m hoping I can get another copy at Equine Affair. It’s very good, the diagrams are easy to follow and it is progressive.
I agree that I would like to see more explanations, but it’s a great tool nonetheless.

Done - ordered 101 jumping exercises for $22.00 from Amazon.ca including shipping.
Many thanks.

Any comments on Jimmy Wofford’s book? Modern Gymnastics.

Jim’s book is excellent and the accompanying DVD with voice-over by Jim is tremendously useful because it shows how the horses learn from the exercises. I highly, highly recommend it.

I got a copy at Greenhawk. Yes, the original version. I also picked up the new version at Rolex last year.

No way! Well, now you are going to make me drive an hour to check! Thanks

Another good one is Cavalletti Schooling of Horse and Rider over Ground Poles by Reiner Klimke. It’s out of print and hard to find, but if you can score one on a used site it’s a good book.

I’ve got that one, too! Probably more info in both those than I need!

I need the distances :

the zig zag fences

the four fences like an “X” in the middle of the arena and various patterns

the two offset fences, one set off the wall at one end of the arena, to help with roll backs and the other further down the arena more in the middle of the arena, requiring a leg yield to get there.

Been too long… if I could draw on here I could explain.

In addition to the above excellent suggestions, Bert De Nemethy’s book has diagrams with distances and such.

Pat Burgess has a wonderful “complete” exercise that builds from poles on the ground to gymnastic to a few-fence exercise. It is in Celebrity Jumping Exercises, which has other great exercises with distances etc. explained in detail. The book is focused on eventing.

I also like the exercises (they are not grids) that are in Anne Kursinski’s book.

Thanks, all.

pryme_thyme, I’ve had the same issues with trying to find the book in Canada, however the link above features the book and shipping is available for us. There is also the option to purchase just the book, without the audio. It’s going on my Christmas list!
