Hi, I was wondering if you guys have a good suggestion for a hunting book. I would like a book that goes into detail about all the terms/definitions, how the hunt works, etc. I am hoping that hunting can be something that my hubby can enjoy with me (he likes riding and jumping but doesn’t have time to show). Thanks!
Riding to Hounds in America by Wadsworth- my old Pony Club bible on hunting- not sure how hard it is to find.
Rita Mae Brown Books
You know, they are fiction/mysteries, but the Rita Mae Brown Books actually are pretty informative about what goes on in the hunt world… Specifically the “Sister Jane” ones. ( I am a big-time hunt wanna-be and I really enjoy them… someone will probably tell me they are way off base, sigh) Now, if you already hunt and are looking for a primer, you could e-mail and ask your nearest hunt what they recommend. You could also google foxhunting terms…
Just google Rita mae Brown books…
here is a link…
Amazon has the Riding to Hounds in America! Used. Must not be in print any longer…
I’m guessing the OP is eliciting a recommendation to read Wadsworth (which, IIRC, can be taken care of in one sitting, though I imagine I’ll find it repays rereading).
In terms of hunting-related fiction, I have to put in a plug for Siegfried Sassoon’s Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, and though it concerns mainly steeplechasing and only peripherally touches on hunting experiences, an actual memoir, Patrick Smithwick’s Racing My Father, which movingly and vividly recalls the world that Baltimore County once was.
By the way, I’m off to my second hunt with Red Rock this Sunday. Wish me luck!
Thanks I will look into those!
HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
Wilfred… good suggestions, I will try and read those! I have about ten books backed up next to the couch right now, a couple of more won’t hurt a bit… and any that involve horses go on top…
