Boot Fashion - Square Toe

Am I the only one on the planet that does not like the square toe boots that are the rage now? They look ugly and just plain stupid, I don’t get the reason for the choice in the toe design. While I’m at it I never liked the thick clunky sole thing either. I do like the Gypsy boots but give me the good old roper style and in colors!

I broke my foot 30+ years ago and could not wear traditional cowboy boots, way not enough support.

The new boots, not the clunky ones, but the ones with the more athletic shoe soles, I can now again wear cowboy boots, as long as they have those soles.
May not look as neat, but it sure better for my feet.

I agree about some square toes not being pretty, generally, no extremes are.

On the other hand, it is nice that people can wear what they want, why not?

I’m not against anyone wearing them, it’s just my personal take on the style. I like the newer soles v/s leather soles that I always found slick, I just can’t get passed the big square toe.

I share your dislike of the square toes. I have a pair of good ol’ pointy toed boots, you have to be able to nail the cockroaches in the corners when you grow up in Texas! And my other pair has a bit more rounded toe.

I am in the middle sort of person, and like boots that are neither the pointy toe variety, that you could impale someone on, nor the completely square toes seen now
I’m with Bluey on chosing boots with good soles, so that if you have to get off and walk on a very difficult part of a trail, you can actually do so!
I don’t mind a bit of color to my boots, but not some of the loud wild patterns seen
I don’t like riding in Ropers. I like boots that have a good spur seat, so the spurs stay in place, without needing any spur tie downs

Pointy toes help when you have an irritated cow checking out your back pockets and the corral has diamond mesh.
That was my introduction to beef cattle, that are not your gentle, slow Holsteins, that you tap on the hip and they switch their tail at you.

I love my square toes. I have pointy and round toed boots and always reach for the square toe boots first.

I like the square toes because they’re more comfortable for me. That’s what boots should be all about - what’s comfortable for each individual.

I don’t spend very much time staring at my own feet while I’m riding, so it doesn’t really matter to me if they’re ugly or not.

That is interesting.
I guess that those of us that have not tried them really don’t have an opinion.

I know round toed ones fit me better than pointy ones.

Most ranchers and cowboys in our area wear rather pointy old type ones all the time and overshoes when wet, not rubber boots.

Geez…I recall that pointy toe boots have been out of fashion since the early 70s. About that time the Justin Ropers came on the scene and were SO much more comfortable. Then they started making them in colors which was cool because you could match your chaps for equitation/horsemanship. I was a rebel and wore red boots everywhere.

I actually like the look of the square toes. I’m in LOVE with my crepe-soled Fat Baby boots. These are pretty comfortable boots to wear around, although I don’t think I’d ride in them. My favorite boot to wear in the barn is the Ariat Barnyard Side Zip. Now, that’s a comfortable pair of boots.

I think square toe boots are ugly. However, I need boots that are wide in the toe because of my freakishly shaped feet, so square toed boots would probably be a much more comfortable fit for me.

Sadly, also have a freakishly high instep and pull-on style boots are impossible to get on/wear comfortably. All of which means that I will never have a nice, pretty pair of cowboy boots unless I win the lottery and get some custom made.

NoSuchPerson, I had the same problem, and the same belief until I was at a horse expo and a rep from Anderson Bean boots was there. He pulled out a pair of men’s boots, and over my protests I tried them on. Voila! Pull-on boots that fit and were sublimely comfortable. I needed more room in the instep and the cut of their boot gives me that, and no bruising on my foot from a struggle to pull them on, either.

You might try their boots if there’s a local dealer.

Thanks. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of those boots. I’ll check them out.

I don’t dislike square-toed boots. I just haven’t invested in a pair, since my round-toed Ariat roper slip-ons are so comfortable and still going strong after 5 years. Plus, my DH got me another pair of the same for Christmas 3 years ago that I haven’t even worn, yet. I figure at this rate, a new toe style will be the rage by the time I need a new pair of boots!

Hate square-toed boots, but looks like they’re here to stay. I often find a shaft style and sole/heel combo that I really like, only to discover that the boot only comes in a squared-toe. :frowning:

Out,and back in. Actually I think I changed from pointy toes to rounder with the toe caps even before then, '69 or so. Will have to study old show pix some time to recall.

I love my square toe and round toe boots.

What I hate (and think are ugly) are the super pointy boots.

But to each their own.

Personally I do not care at all for the pointy-toed boots, not the look nor the feel on the foot. I do like the semi-round, round, and square toed ones though. I don’t like the overly thick, lug soles on many boots, but I do love a nice crepe sole. I can wear those all day long with no additional pain at the end of the day when I pull them off.

I used to hate them…until I got a pair. Now I love the style!

But I’m not anti-round toe either.

These were my first ever pair of slip on boots (they are men’s boots but they were what I wanted so I got them) - Justin ropers with a crepe sole…LOVE!

And still love these boots! My little toe wore a hole right through the leather, and I refuse to throw them away. I’m going to see if the local leather shop that specializes in shoes can just put a patch over the hole. Function, not fashion, I don’t care what it looks like!

I wanted another pair of Justin’s but black with a square toe and a crepe sole, and the only ones I could find were like $300. So I got these instead:

They still don’t compare to the Justin’s but they are very comfortable. One thing I don’t like about them is the patent leather top doesn’t break in very well. Very stiff. But still comfortable. They just aren’t your traditional leather boot on the top.

I’m saving up for another pair of Justin’s with a crepe sole.

I love pointy boots! I think square toed boots are ugly. I have a friend with nice, plain, semi-round-toed boots and I like them a lot but haven’t been able to find any.

My problem with boots is I have a narrow foot, high arch, and narrow heels - the square-toed boots (besides being ugly) just don’t fit my foot. My pointy-toed boots do fit my foot. I’m not a fan of the leather soles, but my pointy-toes have them. I did get some lovely Ariats that fit my foot well and have a nice sole, but they are too pretty to ride in. Sigh.
