Boot recomendation for someone with plantar fasciitis

The title is kind of self explanatory. I had it years ago and used to have to tape up my foot pretty heavily for riding. Then I discovered Mountain Horse High Riders which had phenomenal support and I could stop taping. Mountain Horse discontinued that model and now the PF is back.

I’ve been using kinesio tape and that has helped quite a bit for rides that are about 45 minutes but that is not long enough for hunting. It did confirm that it is a support issue.

So I have been researching men’s boots and looking for a boot that provides a lot of support which usually means steel shanked.

The only one that seems like it might do the job is a Dehner Patrol boot. Steel shanked and double soled. They sell them to mounted cops.

So does anyone have an opinion on the Dehner Patrol Boot or a suggestion for something else?

Use the Birkenstock inserts in the boots. I used to do that when my PF was bad.

I started using good quality inserts as well - made all the difference!

Yes, you will need to go with inserts for PF. My podiatrist recommended custom or semi-custom inserts that should last for many years, saving me money on boots in the long run!

I deal with PF. I also event, so walking courses can be fun.

What has worked:

Inserts. Go to a Target or Walmart that has the Dr.Scholls machine you stand on and it spits out a Recommended insert. It works pretty darn well. I put those inserts into whatever boot I’m riding in or shoe I’m walking in.

Kinesio tape helps.

Get thee an awful PF boot to sleep in. It keeps your foot flexed in a certain way. I hate it. It’s awkward. It works.

For walking around- do you remember those ridiculous Sketchers Shape Ups? The ones they claimed toned your butt while you walked? Well, they don’t tone your butt, however, they DO really help with the PF while walking around! Go figure. P.S. They’re hideous. Abandon all hope of fashion for awhile.

Do your Achilles tendon stretches, wear the pf boot at night and get custom inserts from a podiatrist - these things keep my pf at bay so I can ride, hike and generally live a pf free life.

Gin stirrups.

Get custom orthotics made through a podiatrist. That is what I did and it worked for me.

Doesn’t need to be custom. Clinical studies have shown that for straightforward PF, you can go with a high quality over-the-counter one like Lynco or Superfeet. The Superfeet Carbons should fit in riding boots fairly well and only cost about $55.

I only wear riding boots when I’m mounted. If unmounted, I wear either running shoes for barn chores, or Timberland work boots.

I will buy boots oversize so I can fit in additional padding to help with PF.

My Tredstep paddock boots with superfeet insoles are so supportive, I can hike in them. And this is from someone with no arch whatsoever. It helps if you do foot exercises to strengthen your arch support as well.

Question, I pulled my Achilles tendon in May and slowly it is getting better but now my PF is acting up. As I did it at work I go to the phyiso twice a week and they are talking about me having an injection in the PF for the pain. Has anyone else had this done?

Supports never worked for me. What has helped is a Back on Track calf brace to keep my calf muscles warm and flexible so they don’t pull on my tendons and plantar fascia. That and a heating pad on my calves before bed.

Riding boots with enough room in the foot to put in better insoles and to be able to spread your toes out. What helped my plantar fasciitis was insoles with good arch support that were soft, memory foam type material. Some people recommended harder insoles with good arch support, but the softer ones helped me more. And Back on Track socks helped too.

I have found that if my feet start to ache spreading my toes as wide as I can helps as much if not more than the achilles stretches.

I don’t have PF, but found a version of hb’s advice to be helpful for my regular old ‘tired feet’!
I bought Mountain Horse Firenze boots (which have a pretty nice footbed/insole already) and added Ariat insoles that make it feel like I’m wearing sneakers! The foot part of the boot was a bit roomy, so the additional insoles actually helped with that.

Not for PF, but I’ve had needles stuck in the bottom of my feet plenty of times. Hurts. Like. Hell. Even the tiny, tiny acupuncture filaments for dry needling are usually scream worthy.

That said, I’ve found cortisone to be pretty effective for most things. Just demand that the doc numb your foot first. The last time I got a trigger point* injection in the bottom of my foot, I barely felt it between the Lioderm patch I put on a few hours before and the Gebaur’s Chloride spray (freezy stuff) in the office.

*Doc was a little freaked “OMG, do you really want me to this? It will really hurt” Well no, I don’t really want it, but it’s the only thing that works.
