I’m sorry for yet another boot thread but I did a search and couldn’t find anything that was similar to my situation. Long story short I have always had big calves. even when I was very thin my calves were large. I’m not super tall either, about 5’5 and my calves measure just under 16 inches wide and 16.5 tall. My foot is a US 7.5. This combo is apparently really hard to fit. I have tried a few different boots and a ton of chaps and they are either too small and I have to force them on and suffer breaking them in and they eventually break from the stress on the zipper or if they are too wide/tall they eventually stretch out and become too big. It’s weird and I’m sick of wasting money on boots and chaps that don’t fit. Does anyone have any recommendations for customs or off the rack that might fit me?I should mention I ride hunters so they need to be pretty conservative. Thanks for your help all!
I have short, fat legs. The SmartPac Harwich half chaps fit me like they were made for me.
I’m in Canada so I can’t get Smart Pac to ship to me. I should have mentioned that in my original post. I will research on the Harwichs though and maybe get some next time I am in the States.
The Ovation Flex Plus boot in wide/short will work for your measurements. About $289
Custom maybe.
These are my FAVORITE half chaps. Good price, decent leather, if you clean them regularly they stay brand new looking. Available in tons and tons of combinations, they are just about as custom as you can get for the price.

Tredstep’s Deluxe Half Chaps come in size 16/16 (calf/height). They have a lot of elastic so 16.5 shouldn’t be a problem. They also have a 17/16 if that’s better.
I have found ariat tends to carry boots that fit wider calves. If you have a local tack store that carries a lot of different ariat styles I would go there. If they only carry one or two types I would order online. I think you can order directly from ariat and if not they can help you find the right line for you and size and help you find a retailer.
You can go custom too, but ariats have always been good to me.
Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I should mention that I won’t be able to try any on. We have one very small tack store in my province and they don’t have a very wide range of boots. I have tried Tredstep chaps in the past and the zippers broke but maybe I just had a faulty pair. My current tall boots are Ariat Heritage Contours and they are ok (I have the wide/medium) but they are a tiny bit short and the next size up is too tall… Sigh. I will check out all the ones you guys recommended.
I’m sad that the Ovation half chaps don’t seem to come in my size. Calves are between 13 and 14" but measurement they indicate for height (point of ankle to back of knee) is barely 12".
I work in a tack shop and in general the Tredsteps seem fine for quality. Our clientele would not be shy about complaining if they weren’t! Just make sure you get the right size for your legs. Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the ground and have a friend measure around the largest part of your calf to make sure of the size. Tredstep makes several in your size range so you really shouldn’t have a problem.
