I have a mare that is just plain more comfortable being booted on all fours. We trail ride and ride like endurance riders. Even tho I no longer do the sport.
I use easy boot gloves on her fronts and those work great. Never come off.
I have tried them on her rears and if she spooks or puts any amount of torque back there, one or both will come off. I have yet to try the power straps back there - that will be my next step.
Her hooves measure: 4 1/2" wide and 4 3/4 long
I have a pair of renegades and those also come off. I have a sales rep lady coming out today to check my renegades. She’s thinking the viper captivator might work better because the renegade captivator is too low on her and won’t stay up on her bulbs.
I don’t like the epics because the buckle is always breaking on rocks or logs or something and once that is broke, forget it.
Anyone have a ton of experience with rear boots and by my measurements, have any ideas? I also tried the back country but they were so bulky, my horse didn’t want to trot out and when she did, she traveled awful in them.
I have the opposite problem- the hinds stay put no matter what with both Gloves and Renegades but occasionally the fronts will pop off. However, they only come off when I’m being lazy and don’t tape. Have you tried doing duct tape or athletic tape under the boot? I use athletic tape when I’m not going to be crossing a lot of what and duct tape when I know we are going to be in the river, etc. Easy Boot has some pretty good videos on how to tape.
I have mueller tape and that was also my next step besides the power strap.

what do your horse’s rear hooves measure at?

I am not sure off the top of my head, it’s been a couple of years since I actually measured. I do know she wears a 1 in Gloves and a 0 in regular Renegades
The renegade rep came out today and looked at my renegades. The captivator was too tight. She adjusted them, we put them on my horse and she felt they fit real nice and I can see how they WERE too tight. So… I’m going to give them a try and see what happens. She said IF they come off, chances are they are too tight. The captivator should go up by using only a pinkie finger of pressure before tightening down the bottom strap. I swear my horse moves better in the gloves and that will be another choice I’ll need to make if that is the case. Could just be my imagination.
Tabula: Did you find the renegades were more bulky on the trail than the gloves or no?

I didn’t find them particularly bulky and my mare seems to move equally well in both. I ended up switching for two reasons- I had some issues with the customer service at Renegade and I hate dealing with the cables. They were faster to put on though since I didn’t tape them, but I do the gloves so much I’ve got it down to a science lol
Take a look at Scoot Boots? I’ve been pretty lucky with boots so far, and my horse just wore out his first pair of Scoot Boots (on his hinds; Renegade Vipers on the front). They’re kind of like a cut-down sandal version of the Easyboot Gloves. Very lightweight, nothing gets stuck in them, and in my experience at least, they STAY ON.

How are the Scoot Boots traction-wise? I’ve looked at them and they are pretty intriguing because we have a lot of water to cross in this area and the Scoot Boots definitely look like they offer drainage. How do they seem to fit compared to Gloves or Renegades? (ie if a horse has the proper hoof shape to wear either gloves or renegades are they going to be the right shape for Scoot Boots?)

I’m not Tabula, but the answer to this for me is YES! Not a huge boot fan at all, would rather the horse just be bare, but since that is not always possible, I really like the Glove for the horses that can wear them.
yeah I’d like to know how they compare to a hoof that fits in a renegade also. I saw them as I went to their website. I’d have to look at them again on how they are put on and adjusted. I needed HELP with the renegades. I’m good with sizing in the gloves since I’ve used them for so many years on different horses.
My TB is being turned out with Scoot Boots in front because the ground is so hard here and he is flat soled, hence he is bruising easily. He tears around the field, galloping, bucking, turning sharply, and rolling with them on. These boots don’t move AT ALL. Amazing.
I had great service too from Scoot Boot USA, by the way.
He has worn Renegades (size 2W) in the past but they rubbed his heels if he was turned out in them. For Gloves, he would wear a 2.5 wide. He has a round foot - about the same width as length. He fits a size five in the Scoot Boot, but he does need to stay trimmed for this to fit well. It’s snug.
I haven’t had them long enough to comment on durability but so far I am thrilled with them.
I wonder why the renegades rubbed him? When you put the captivator up on the bulbs, was that a tight fit or loose?

The fit was snug with the captivator for the Renegades. Actually, the problem I had was more that the neoprene lining held excess moisture against the heel bulbs softening and weakening the skin. So “rubbing” wasn’t really the right term to use.
This happened mostly if he was turned out in the Renegades, but not as much during rides. It is very humid here during the summer. It’s hard to keep boots dry.

Ahh, ok. I wonder if he had a reaction to the neoprene too?? I had a horse that had reaction to heat and splint boots if they were neoprene. I found a pair that were lined with felt and that solved that issue.
To size the Scoot Boots, I took pictures of my horse’s feet with a measuring tape across them and emailed the link to the company’s founder. If your horse has a decent barefoot trim, they should fit fine! They just slide right on. There are a couple of straps in front — equivalent to the powerstraps for Easyboot Gloves — and a loose pastern strap for insurance, I guess. Sometimes the straps came loose, a screw backed out, that kind of thing, but the boots themselves never budged.
We put more than 300 miles on them over all kinds of terrain, including deep mud and a lot of very technical, rocky trails. The traction is great, and I love how light and simple they are. My horse will be wearing Scoot Boots all round once his Renegades wear out.
