I like to use Velcro boots when warming up at shows because they’re quicker to take off before we do our test.
My horse’s current boots are getting old and ratty, so I’d like to get some new ones. I love the way the fleece lined brushing boots look, but I’m not sure how good they’d be for those rainy shows? (Or super hot shows) What are people’s experiences with these? Any other recommendations?
Zero experience, so sorry i have no opinion or suggestions, but hope you don’t mind this question, i’ve just always been curious…
When you use boots in a sand ring, does the sand get up in the fitted pastern area and abrade?
No. Sand doesn’t really get up under the close fitted types of boots in the way you’re thinking. I generally brush mine off a couple of times a week and wash them every few weeks but they tend to be more dusty than sandy.
I don’t love the fleece ones when it’s wet. I generally use the Woof brushing boots because they come small enough for my cob sized horse, but there are a lot of similar brands that also work well. The Shires ARMA ones seem to be really popular. My old horse was prone to skin issues and did do better in the fleece lined boots or in the Trizone Allsport boots which are expensive but very light and well-ventilated
The DSB 2 boots are fleece lined, but the fleece doesn’t peek out of the bottom, so they’ll tend to collect less mud and sand.
I have the LeMieux Mesh Brushing Boots in white and like them a lot. They add a little bit of extra protection without overheating the legs and making them super sweaty in the summer. Easy on, easy off, wash up nicely, and not horribly expensive, either. I also used to really like the Valena wool fleece boots as they’re moisture-wicking, hold up well, and are made in the USA. However, they’re definitely pricier! If I were really looking to spend obscene money on boots, I’d love to try the Veredus ones. I have a pair of their bell boots that I’ve been using for over a year on my horse during daily turnout and they are the longest-lasting pair of bell boots I’ve ever owned. This horse was destroying bell boots left and right when I moved him to our new barn last year and the Veredus bell boots are the only ones that managed to survive his shenanigans, so I feel like the quality of their products is quite good.
