Boots: Koenig vs Petrie

I’m asking for a friend but also asking for myself.

I had and loved my old, fairly cheap, Petrie 3000s. Wore like iron and finally started giving up about 10 years in. I installed zippers in them and they were awesome.

I replaced them with $$$$$ Koenig Grandgesters. Other than a little bit shinier, I don’t really think they’re more than 2x better than the old Petries. I had to replace the dumb delicate coil zipper almost immediately and there are ugly rubs where my (correctly sized) stirrup occasionally makes contact with the outside ball of my foot. My Petries never did that.

A friend is looking at new tall boots and I’m trying to advise her about what to look at. I haven’t seen or touched any high-end Petries recently so I don’t know how they compare to the old 3000s. The new $400 ones are certainly not even close to the quality of the old 3000s. There are too many complaints about DeNiros out there to recommend them, imho.

Does anyone currently own any high end Petries to comment on their current quality? How are the zippers? Soles? Stitching?

I have Petrie Olympics which are ~$500 at Dressage Extensions, so not quite their high end. I’ve replaced the zippers in my schooling boots probably 3 times and they are just now; after about 7 years starting to be so broken down in the ankle that I’m considering rotating my show boots down and getting new pair. The stitching and the soles are completely intact. Granted I ride in them 2-3 times a week so YMMV.

FYI: Petrie Sydney Boots are on sale at DE now for $300.

The Sydney’s are very soft. The Olympics are good for the price point, I think. I’m wondering more about their higher end equivalent to the Koenig Grangesters, mostly because my friend is very tall so requires custom-boot-height.

BTW - Mountain Horse has a new dressage boot out, the Seranade. Back to normal boot with the front inside zipper. And they come in a extra tall. Looking at around $450 in the US, but only a couple of places are handling them. I ordered from Germany to get the size I wanted. Will be here in a week or so. Won’t buy Petries again. Find the leather not “up to snuff” for real wearing. Won’t spend the money on Konigs.

Thanks Digi (I’m the friend). I just checked the Serenade sizing and only the narrow even comes close to what I need for height. And I’m very far from narrow in width…so that won’t work but I appreciate the suggestion!

@digihorse - thanks for the heads up on the MH Serenade boots. Would you mind coming back and giving us a review when you get them. In particular, I’m interested in if they have a back stiffener or not? My current MH boots fit like they were made for me, and the Serenades come in brown, too so I am very interested!

I know this wasn’t one of the options, but I like Cavallo better than either Koenigs or Petries. More comfortable footbed than either of the others, and better quality leather than the Petries. And they do come in quite tall sizes.
