You wear the tops with your colors - you do not wear tops if you are not wearing colors on your coat. And vice versa.
You also do not wear colors and tops when you are a guest or participating in a Joint Meet, unless permission has been given in advance.
And to make it more confusing a hunt may specify a particular piece of attire that is unique to that Hunt.
So, yes - the person who can enlighten you to specifics is the hunt secretery or one of the Masters.

Are field boots ever appropriate?

for cubbing/informal season
But not black field boots. Ever.
(though naturally show ring fashion has sneaked into the hunt field and no one ‘really’ snoots up at you if you wear black field boots. Still, they are never correct in the hunt field. An aberration.)

again check with the Hunt Sec or MFH of the particular hunt you are interested in.
The hunts i hunt with allow people to wear what they can afford and what is comfortable, as far as boots go. I can’t afford customs and can’t get my foot into a pair of dress boots due to too much hardware in my ankle, so have field boots. They don’t expect you to go buy dress boots just to hunt.
So you should check.
But technically no they are not correct.

Indeed, as an example up at the Chagrin Valley Hunt, it’s actually:
The only ones who were Black Dress boots and white breeches are the Masters and the Huntsman.
I believe that we’re the only ones that do it that way though.
