Boss Mare 1st, or 2nd?

Oh boy, I have a new horse. A mare, which now means three girls. Peyton arrived a couple hours ago. She and my other two are in side-by-side paddocks and will be probably until sometime tomorrow, at which point I’ll introduce them one at a time. I can’t decide if I should let boss mare in first with Peyton, or not-boss-mare first. At any point, Bossy will undoubtably herd not-boss away from Peyton. At least for a while. Thank god no one seems to be in heat.

So what are your thoughts; Bossy first, or second?

This really depends on your horses.

But I tend to think bossy 1st is better. Get it over and done with without the boss mare having her subordinates to protect.

Currently, that’s my thought as well. Then again, I think it would be nice for not-boss to get a chance to visit with Peyton. I’ll decide by tomorrow.

Personally, I would wait a few more days. We stall new horse between horses that will be the first friends, so they sniff and scream with hard wall, metal divider above, between them from shoulders down. Kicks are deflected, no injuries. Things settle with waiting those extra days, to a lesser conflict when the two single horses go out together. Each horse is introduced singly to the new horse in a good sized paddock or field, they spend the day together. After each horse has met the new guy, we add one new horse to the pair per day, until the group is complete.

I’ve had best luck with putting the main boss mare in first. I have all mares and they get on great even with a very bossy boss mare lol

I’ve had horses almost 60 years and I’ve never waited more than 36 hours. Everyone is out 24/7 with a run-in. Update this evening.

Bossy went first, made a half hearted threat and that was it. Not bossy went next. Everyone had their heads in respective hay piles. A non-event.

Notice the big roan has herself positioned between the two. It’s much less of an issue today, but they still aren’t letting newbie close. I think I’ll take Bossy out for a ride today. And then not-bossy.

YEA! thank you for sharing a picture!
