Bot eggs in manure?

I didn’t even know this was a thing and it doesn’t seem like it matches any info I could find on the bot life cycle. I thought they were supposed to be larval when they come out. But I saw what looked exactly like bot eggs in my horses’ (fresh) manure and the local lab confirmed. It doesn’t sound like they’ve seen it before either. It’s odd because I haven’t seen any eggs at all in the usual places, like on the horses’ legs. Has anyone else experienced this?

Their fecals were otherwise all negative so I wouldn’t normally deworm until the fall, but should I? With what?

New one on me. I guess you would use Ivermectin/ boticide?

It’s possible, but not very likely, that a bot fly laid eggs on the manure. There are no eggs shed inside the horse - the adult flies don’t live there, and the larva don’t lay eggs.

How did the lab confirm they are bot eggs?

I watched one of the horses pass manure in the wash rack and immediately saw the eggs (or whatever), so they were definitely there when it came out. I’m not sure how the lab confirmed. I suppose they could be wrong, especially since they hadn’t seen it before. If that’s not what they are though, then what!?

I don’t know what else they could be - Seeds? It just can’t be a bot egg coming out of a horse.

I’m going to ask the $64 question ---- did you happen to take pictures:)

That’s a new one on me, as well but in this day and age, I suppose anything is possible.

As far as bots only on the legs ---- no they don’t limit themselves to the legs.

There is such a thing as Throat Bots. They lay their eggs deep in the hair along the jowel line ANNNND they are self-migrating into the horse’s mouth! How’s that for gross:(

i have had to pull the jowel hair backward to see them. They are hard as heck to remove in that area so I smother them with any kind of ointment — Vaseline, A&D, antibiotic, just anything you can get your hands on at that moment. I like ointment better than creams as it is more suffocating and stays on longer.

cursor down to “Shmptoms and Types”,mwhere it gives a short description of Throat Bots.

getting back to the OP’s issue & question – has your horse eaten anything with seeds in it? I chop watermelon and feed it every day as long as they are in season. I remove as many of the seeds as I can but a few get by me. When I see them in the manure they can resemble pieces of tapeworm:(

Could it actually be partially un-chewed oats that have passed through? The fecal would have picked up worms in his manure, just not bot eggs?

I’m pretty sure that’s the beginning of mold growth. Manure on my farm does it, too, this time of year, and will be completely yellow and fuzzy within 24-36 hours if not removed. It comes on really fast when it’s so hot and humid.

Lots of things go to seed this time of year, including grasses.

It seems like the wrong color to me? Plus only one horse eats oats and I’ve seen it in the manure of all three.

I don’t think it can be mold because it comes out of the horse just like that.

I’m thinking seeds is most likely at this point…

I recall reading (here?) about a case of “wtf is that in the manure” that was perplexing a boatload of vets, until one with an interest in botany identified POLLEN GRAINS in the poop. Weird, huh? So some sort of seed or pollen or other plant material seems likely

Might be timothy seeds? That’s about the only thing that comes to mind, not that there aren’t a whole lot of small yellowish things around…
