I use box fans at home and on the road and for years have gone the low budget twine and bungee route for securing them to stalls, trailers, etc. For those who use the special bags that some tack shops sell, do you think they are worth it? Pros, cons?
I have one in my show trunk and have never actually used it! I should try to remember it at the show this weekend and report back. I always use bungee cords.
At shows in the past, I’ve used box fans and bungees. Not familiar with the bags, but only point I’ll make is: Box fans are a hazard. Use a good enclosed motor , rated for outdoor use, etc. fan in your barns. On the road? use new box fans and know they should not be used forever and stored and used over and over again for many seasons…The big issue to me is the box fan, never intended for dust, water, horses, etc. Just to keep that in mind. Twine: ugh. only adds another flammable scenario…(but I HAVE used it on the spontaneous had to get a fan up at a show) just saying know the box fan issue and use them as carefully as you can when you have to. You shouldn’t have to ‘at home’.
Yes! So easy to get up and take down, and to change the height/angle by adjusting the straps.
Box fans are a major fire hazard, so we only use them at shows, and only when we are physically there. If we go to the hotel for the night, we unplug them. At home they are strictly forbidden, as we do leave fans unattended. Sealed motor fans only - and most of us use the one from Ramm Fence.
An old style (large hole) hay net does a great job.
We do not allow box fans. We will only put up the round enclosed motor 20” fans and we mount them on the top of the stall wall with a bracket from smart pack. Every 2 stalls have a dedicated plug so no extension cords, then we had an electrician wire in a thermostat on both sides of the barn, so when temp hits 78 degrees the fan will come on and as the temp drops back down the fans turn off. It is something less to remember to turn off or unplug. The 20” fans also come with a wall bracket for quick mounting at the show. Had a close call with a box fan, and we do not allow them to be in the barn any longer. It also burned up the extension cord when it burned up. Fortunately a breaker popped and turned off the power and we did not get a full on fire. Thank god.
