Braided curb rein

Trainer told friend of mine to find a braided curb rein for her pelham since the traditional flat reins slide through her fingers. In all of my years of riding I’ve never seen them, or even knew they existed. I just made sure I kept my fingers closed so they didn’t slip! So… do they exist and where to find them?

have never seen one

curb reins should not be tight so there should not be an issue of “Pulling Through”

friend may be able to find a rein with stops or a thin rubber lining on one side

typically the curb is thinner ( narrower) which allows them to be distinguished by feel in the hand and to not occupy so much space between the fingers

two braided reins sounds like a fist full

You can get them at saddleseat tack shops - I know Winner’s Circle/World Champion & Fennells carry them. Fennell’s has a few variations of braided, laced and plaited.

They come in standard 3/8 width, it wasn’t that much to have in your hands. I rode with a plain snaffle & laced curb.

R.E. Fennells ~ Red Mile Track ~ Lexington, Ky.

Freedman Harness ~ Midway Ky. & Canada

LaSalle Harness ~ Rhode Island

All these three tack stores make what you are looking for … google for websites.

  • and all the above mentioned will custom make any reins, lines, tack you want …
All very nice people and EXCELLENT at their profession ~

Do you want laced or braided? And are you looking specifically for a curb rein, or just a rein narrower than the one used on the snaffle? If you want a laced 1/2" rein, I believe several companies make those (yes, in full size, not just pony size). I know Edgewood does.

But otherwise, yes, a company specializing in saddleseat will also carry what you’re looking for.

Yes, definitely use the saddleseat shops. I’ve ridden with both braided and laced curb reins, and really like them.
