I’m already plotting for the upcoming show season, oh dear. I’m planning to restock the standard brown-black-white, of course, but The Kid and I have discussed getting some other colors since her little chestnut pony is rather difficult to color match. We already decided on getting hunter green and maybe some navy, but I’d love to hear what other people like to use!
We have several horses our braided braids in purple and it looks fantastic. Obviously not a bright purple more of a deep grape color. It’s out lucky color
I keep a grey yarn and a lavender yarn in the tack box for two special braids in my chestnut horse’s mane.
The lavender is for a lawschool friend who died of cancer at age 28, the grey is for a late trainer who taught me so much, and who said “I love this horse” when he first came to the barn as a barely started 3.5yo. That trainer was a true horseman who was always kind to the horses; training in his program (which his daughter continues) is always a calm, kind, unruffled process and I remember his words in my head every ride.
Every time I braid the horse those braids go in.
I like navy on a chestnut.
I used green on my sorrel QH. Just don’t use white on a black horse — the white will make it look like a seam opened up and his stuffing is coming out! (Ask how I know…) Red and royal blue looked good on that same horse, though.
I keep navy, for clients who like it and my sister’s good gray horse, and hunter green, for my horse’s lucky braid.
Navy, hunter green, deep purple, violet, and slate blue. Plus the regulars. Sometimes pale blue in a grey pony. I work for a braider with a large list of big clients, and we use color whenever we can :). Love love love the colors. (Except at medal finals and indoors). Last year in ocala we did every single horse in green on st Patrick’s day. Flying down and back to ocala for the next 7 weeks…I’ll see what’s popular this year.
Burgundy seems popular for chestnuts around here.
My trainer has black with subtle rainbow sparkles for one of her horses. Its really cool because you can’t see the rainbow color from far away but up close it’s there (and it’s easier to take out than regular black).
I normally use navy on my black horse (so much easier to see when it’s time to take them out!) and I also keep hunter green and a deep purple on hand. I’ve used the purple on my chestnut, haven’t had a chance to use the green yet. I try to match the color to what shirt I’ll be wearing.
Saw a pale pink on the most adorable of grey ponies! Perhaps a bit out there but it was more for the child’s enjoyment.
I braid my own, and I love purple in black manes, teal in chestnuts and light mint green in white manes. I usually just match the color to the mane, but when I can go a little crazy, those are my go to colors.
Ahem, pictures of these colors braided into manes are totally required!!
Dark purple for the ponies black mane. Color matched for chestnut except for a hunter green lucky braid (also known as my oh Sh!t braid)

Agree
I braided in pink for a Breast Cancer Charity Horse show… I love the other color ideas.
I’ve done Miss Mare, who happens to be black, in a very deep raspberry. I thought she looked stunning.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen mint green on a gray, that sounds so pretty! Thank you guys for all your ideas!
