Braiding help. Big rub out.... Lusitano

So Bravo’s mane finally grew long enough to keep a french braid in. Then, he rubbed a 2 inch wide section out TO THE SCALP reaching thru the fence (I think/)… and the mane on head side of that rub is almost too short to braid as well. So I am not sure the scallop type of braid I have seen done with long manes (braid a few inches, push thru, bring to next braid… ) would work…
Who has a solution? Or an idea? Very sad…

My Lusitano also did this this year! Reaching though the fence to steal Pony Friend’s hay. Mine did it slightly above the withers, so I did most of the braids the usual scallop way for horses with thick manes, then did a couple of button braids below. It wasn’t perfect but it was presentable.

Welcome to the club. My horse rubbed out half his mane one year and made me want to cry!

If I’m being honest, I’d just hog it all off now  or make both sides equal. It took me so long to even consider doing that to my horse, but I actually love it so much!

Or… You could try regular button braids with lots of quick-braid spray to help hold it in. You could try it by braiding the string in and seeing if that may hold better.

And for speeding up the hair growth, I’d recommend M-T-G. Just be sure to apply only at night (it can burn in the sun being oil) and do a patch test first.

If you need to braid, use a LOT of strands of wool to make up for the missing hair. It comes out surprisingly good. Do very wide braids for your scallop (hint wider than the 2" bald spot) so you’ll have a bit of real hair either side of the problem area to anchor the fake braid. It comes out just fine even though it’s a pain in the butt to do it.

thanks all. No shows until January, so I have time to practice…
