Braiding with flowers

Since my horse’s name is Daizey and there are a bunch of daisies growing around the barn, I thought it would be cute to braid daisies into her button braids. I’m not really sure on how I would make this work and thought maybe some more experienced with brading might have an idea?

is this for a recongnized show? flowers are illegal im pretty sure.

but what i have done for stuff like that is pick the daisies with the longest stems and then using a pull thru or needle, to pull it through the top of the braid then fold the braids, pull the stem through the bottom the braid. fold again, and rubber band/tie yarn, cut off the part of the stem that shows. if you have the braids tight enough they stay in pretty well. also hair spray the braids so they dont have fly aways.

If you need it for a photo op it is really going to depend on how you pull up her braids to the button. If anything you could get some florists tape and reinforce the base of the flower and a small bit of stem. Then sew a stout thread thru the base , the florists tape will bind it.and pull it into the button using a needle running the thread over to the next braid and weaving it in

You do know it is not permitted for shows

YOu will have to provide a photo

Some daisy stems are quite pliable, but the base of the flower to stem connection should be reinforced with the florists tape.

Nothing to add, since I’ve never tried it, but…

do post pictures when you’re done!!

I think you would probably have to braid the stem of the flower into the braid, then pull it through as you normally would. Can’t speak for the positioning of the blossom after the “pull through and tie off” stage, though. You’d probably be better served by putting the daisies into the braids when they’re completed, and then securing them with the florist’s tape.

Although, why you would want to go to such lengths, is beyond me. The daisies will fade in a day, and then you’ll have wilted flowers braided and taped into your horse’s mane. Bleeccchhh. :dead:

No, although that would certainly get us recognized:lol: It’s just for fun. I bought a plain fly bonnet and amde a large swarovski crystal daisy on it, and thought that some daisies added in the mane too would be cute. I’m jumping her tomorrow to practice for prix caprilli and figured since someone would be taking photos, I’d get her looking all dolled up

Absolutely. I’m just hoping it doesn’t rain again and ruin my escapade

It’s just a quick, fun thing so they won’t be in for very long. Even when braidinf for shows, I do it that day. Daizey can get out of and undo anything, although how I don’t really know.

Well, please don’t do it for a recognized show. Or for a schooling show, for that matter. It’s actually against the rules for recognized shows, and I can’t imagine any dressage judge actually appreciating your handiwork at a schooling show, either. Stick to your photo sessions for the “extras” in your girl’s mane, and you’ll be fine.

Oh I know, as much fun as I think it would be, I like to be as professional as possible when showing.

Atta girl.

I see where you’re coming from, though. I’m the queen of bling, and have been known to take it past the point of good taste, on occasion. I’ve had to be physically restrained from buying rhinestone trimmed gloves, saddle pads, and bridles with bling on both cavesson and browband. I do, however, still lust after belts that match both of my blinged out browbands. I just don’t have the money to get either, at the moment. :sigh:

OP- I’d love to see pictures of this!

I’m far too old to do the dress-up things I do to my horses. I figure once I have kids it’ll stop but for now it’s practice.

About showing… yeah, although it wasn’t a great idea I did something similar to my horse a long time ago. Disclaimer: I was in high school. I was often complemented for my braiding jobs and usually hired to braid for others (my grandmother taught me to braid when I was very young, using a Cabbage Patch doll). It carried over to the horses nicely!

Anyway, I had an Arabian and put in a French braid, which was fine. Then, the pièce de ré·sis·tance: I added tiny pastel butterfly clips all over that mane. Went in and showed (only intro level and at a schooling show) and the judge loved it. Unfortunately I do not have pictures.

Hay

Daizyfields: Go for it! You know the point of horses is to have fun. I love dressing my horse up, braiding this, braiding that…Putting quarter marks on his butt even for turn out!

You go girl! And, if you’re showing at the lower levels with your daisies…

You SHOW girl!!!

I’ve always enjoyed Robert Vavra’s photography - and secretly wanted to do it myself…
so I thought if you used the small braiding elastics and RANDOMLY place violas or forget-me-nots in the manes and tails…you go girl!

One way to secure the head of the daisy (old, old floral designer trick) Take a very light weight piece of floral wire run it through the base of the flower from the bottom of the head next to the stem, loop it back and down through the head again – also next to the stem, Pull it down snug – can’t see wire from the top of the flower) now you can use floral tape to wrap the stem and wires and your flower head will fall apart before it comes loose. You can also make the stem as long as you need it to be this way and clip it as you braid

Good luck
