Branded hanoverian...does it mean that he is actually registered?

I was given a lovely hanoverian after the owners couldn’t take care of him any longer. He has a hanoverian brand with (I think) a 34 under the brand. I asked the owners for his papers and they didn’t think he was full-blood. I guess I assumed that if he was branded, then he is a full blood. Any thought/idea/suggestions on determining how to figure out exactly what he is (or is not)?

Thanks!

Can you post a photo of the brand? Approximately how old is he? Horses branded by the American Hanoverian Society have the H brand with US under it if they were born before 2008 (I think that’s the year) and those after that have the H with the two-digit birth year.

If he has a Hanoverian brand, he’s registered Hanoverian. Though all that really means is both his sire and dam were approved - he could have a healthy infusion of lineage from other registries/breeds considered acceptable by the AHS.

Hanoverians imported from Germany will have the last 2 digits of their registration number branded below their H. He may be imported? If you have any information on the year of his birth, together with his description and #'s below the brand, you should be able to have the verband look him up and potentially identify him. With a gelding, it’s more for interest - if his passport and ownership are missing, they can be replaced but I believe you need to trace back the chain of ownership and have documentation. Probably not worth the hassle, if all you want to know is his registration information.

He is definitely registered and imported.

How old do you think he is? Have you scanned him for a microchip? Do you know anything about his bloodlines? Registered name? You can do a lot of searching in Horsetelex if you have some pieces. If not, you may need to reach out to the verband for help.

Thanks for all the responses!

here a picture of the brand.

A bit more info…
He is born in 1997, making him 18.

Thanks!

This is definitely a Hanoverian brand, so he is imported. The numbers branded in Germany beneath the H are always the 3rd and 4th last digits of the horse’s life registration number, not the last two. The last two digits of the life number stand for the year the horse was born.
Please find an explanation on page 17 of the Hanoverian breeders guide at

I can have a look into the german databases…

As far as I read it there are following facts:
-born 1997
-Hannoverian
-brand number is 34

he is a brown gelding?

His life number must be like this:
DE (or 276) 331 XXXXX 3497

It does not make sense to look into a german database (guess FN Jahrbuch) it is too vague as it does not contain the complete population and especially if he is already in the USA for a longer time one may not find him.

If you really want to know take pictures of him from all sides so that the markings can clearly be seen. Than together with the numbers under the brand send it to the German Hanoverian Verband and they may come up with a variety of horses.
If so one can pull hair from him, and have it DNA tested whether he could be by one of the stallions that are the fathers of those the Verband has found.
If you contact them (Homepage was already posted above), they may help you.
You could even try to get a set of papers, but there are a lot of costs involved and for a gelding I would not go that hassle.
