Bravo Packing in Penns Grove, NJ.

Here, rendering plants are not slaughter plants, but separate business.

The rendering plant only handles deceased animals.
They will shoot your animal if it is still alive, but won’t be winched onto their truck unless it is dead, obviously and that is the only way they get any animals in their plant.
Maybe they have other regulations where he is?

I still find it strange, as told, wondering if there is more to the story, as it tends to be when animal rights extremist stories are involved, they being all about the drama, the more exaggerated, the better to incense people and get the interest and so the donations rolling in.[/QUOTE]

I don’t know Bluey, that’s why I asked…I thought rendering plants were separate businesses as well.

As far as looking for $$$, in this instance, there doesn’t appear to be anyone trolling for donations.

I know the difference, as you know. I dunno’ what the case is here or if they are both, or can legally do both… I just know that they take live and dead, from what I’ve heard.

I have not seen anything that I would call extremist about the claims made against this place, stuff I have been aware of FOR YEARS.
The stuff I have read/seen was pretty clearly horrible, mean, intentional and malicious, not to mention unnecessary. YMMV

I just remember years ago there was a big flap on ABR about Bravo. Paul Sorvino’s daughter supposedly did a big expose about one of the sons of the owner who later died of some sort of cancer. Some of her claims were so outrageous that one wonders WHY someone involved in the business would leak/spew some much information: either she was really, really good in bed causing him to spill all of this information to her, or he was just incredibly full of himself plus incredibly stupid, or he was just leading her on with a contrived cock and bull story. After the son died, I remember the father mentioned something along the lines that he didn’t like to slaughter horses anyway, so he might drop that part of the business.

As to this story, it sounds recycled from that particular era, because WHY in the world would someone spout all this crap to someone inquiring about food for their tigers, and in a telephone conversation to boot? Also, since horsemeat is known to be low in fat, keeping horses for months and starving them simply doesn’t make any sense at all.

Furthermore, Bravo because of the above and other items, has been right in the eye of law enforcement for years and has probably been investigated numerous times. Not to mention that people who drop off animals to be put down would probably complain if the conditions were all that horrible.

I’d bet an inquiry to the people in New Jersey who supervise this stuff would answer some of your questions.

This isn’t the best ending for some horses at the end of their road, but it seems to serve a purpose and certainly beats other alternatives. It would seem that some of the accusations listed above would cut severely into their bottom line, which is the reason for having a business in the first place.

P.S. There is nothing in Ms. Sorvino’s expose to suggest that she actually slept with the Bravo guy. She makes it sound like she was such a sympathetic listener that he regaled her with all of those tales just because he liked her.

Monty Merola spent 10 years in prison after being convicted for aggravated rape. He was also charged with two felony counts of animal cruelty but died before he could be convicted.

Hardly the behavior and track record of someone who should be defended for running this type of business.

I have to wonder why we are talking about a dead guy, I guess I am kind of curious how he could be causing a problem now…

yes, it is a slaughterhouse and a hell hole.
