Bravo Packing in Penns Grove, NJ.

Anyone know anything about them? I just read something very disturbing.

Are you keeping us in suspense?

I don’t know if this is true
it’s from a reliable source though.

Alert! At Bravo Packing in Penns Grove N.J. it is hellish buiness as usual!
To all who object to the starvation, willful blinding, and practice of convincing those who love their horses that this is a merciful end for them.

Today I spoke to Joe Merola ( yes he is still crawling this planet after 50 years of the most horrendous abuse of horses).

To my knowledge and in front of my very eyes, Bravo Packing in Penns Grove N.J had shut its doors. A friend brought Bravo back to my attention and I thought I would just see what was what.

This morning I looked up Bravos listing and sure enough it was right there. Although no description of services rendered was shown on the listing, a working phone number was provided.

My discussion with Joe Merola began with my request for packaged horsemeat for my big cats. He cheerfully asked me how I wanted it- ground or chopped. At this point my stomach started crawling
I replied LEAN. He informed me that he sold nothing else. I inquired about some kind of assurance concerning drug tainted meat and he hesitated for the first time. “Okay” I said, “where do you get the horses you slaughter?”. He informed me they were blind horses. I asked him how he procured enough blind horses to stay in business and he said “some come that way and others become that way” (he is chuckling), “I’ve been doing this for 50 years and I know how to handle them” he says proudly. ( My stomach is now requesting permission to do a little business with my throat. )

So my next question has to do with fat. I do not want fat being fed to my tigers. He assures me there are no horses being processed at his facility with any fat. I scoff at this and am skeptical. Again he chuckles and is quite proud to tell me “4 to 6 weeks here and they are as lean as you want. After 50 years I know what to do to be certain of lean meat.” This, he assures me, has to do with “knowing not to feed them”. I am not clear on this statement and ask “you mean knowing what not to feed them?”. He answers me with a giggle ( such a happy man!). He informs me of other sources of fodder for his horrible appetite. These are crippled horses ( “you can’t take them to the sale anymore-those humane people ya know”), and strangely enough, “horses that people have owned for a long time and don’t want anyone else to ride. They know I wont let that happen here.”
We move on to price per lb for my order and agree on 1.50 lb . A bargain
and he can supply as much as I need vacuum sealed.

When we get to delivery destination we hit our first snag. I live hundreds of miles away. It would be too expensive to ship. But have no fear! He hooks me up with a broker that can get me fresh, lean. horsemeat anywhere in the country.
Please understand I have no big cats. Some of my small ones have grand illusions, but horse flesh is treasured and nurtured here.

The approach I used with Mr. Merola was designed to obtain information, and EVERYTHING HE SAID WILL BE USED AGAINST HIM TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY.

Special place in hell for him.

I just read this on FB and shared it as well.
There is a special place in hell for this man for sure.
But also those owners.
How in hell could they believe this was the right solution for their horses?

I don’t like to use the word ‘hate’ - but sometimes I do hate people. :frowning:

It must be true. If you google Bravo Packing there is a video from 2010. How can this not be illegal?

I googled them and they are a rendering plant, handling “dead carcasses” and with permits for that.

Something is not adding up here with the story posted?

Bluey, you need to look for the 2010 video. They say they are a rendering plant.

Huh? Wait, not on the Off topic forum
 It belongs on Off course.
Do we HAVe to have a slaughter thread on here? I was thinking how nice it has been to not see one of these in a long time.
Take it to where the horse stuff goes!
Edited to add
oh brother, Come on Laura, What gives, that stupid story was ancient history and that Video Was posted so many times on slaughter threads on OFF COURSE~ Come on, why do you feel the need to keep posting this crap?

Not looking to any video propaganda animal rights extremist provide.:dead:

Sounds like that is a fabricated story or someone was pulling her leg, realizing that was one more crank type call, not a real customer for their rendering products?
That is why “they didn’t feed them” and other such comments.

Who knows.

This is rich! Since when are you being FORCED to open a thread? You knew what the subject would be right away, yet you chose to make a somewhat asinine comment.

You don’t like the topic? Here’s a thought: ignore it.

As for feeling the need to post this “crap”, those of us who actually care about and value a horse’s life would like to have evidence that many people don’t as we continue the war against slaughter.

You do realize that your “war against slaughter” is fueled by those that are warring against any use of animals by humans?
You are helping them fight your little battle, while you are losing the war and will eventually lose your rights to your animals, if they prevail.

One step at the time, slaughter the low hanging fruit.

Slaughter, for those that are not familiar with these debates, is merely a process by which we use our animals, one more time for some of those we make other uses of, once dead.

Slaughter itself is not bad and needs to be banned because someone, somewhere abused a horse thru that process.
That is like banning all riding because some trainers abuse horses.
Or banning all rescues because some starve horses.

The process of slaughter is a valid one thru which humans have all our existence made use of the natural, renewable resource animals are for all animals.
We don’t chase animals down and eat the ones we can bring down half alive, as other animals do.
We slaughter them, which when done properly, is not objectionable to anyone with any good sense and that understand that is how this world works.

Remember, there is a very big difference in accepting that humans will use animals and do so properly, according to welfare principles, or following animal rights into their war to ban this and that, here slaughter, to eventually eliminate all uses of animals.

Pick your battles wisely, because your rights to your own animals are truly hanging on the outcome.

It is recycled junk
And this is OFF TOPIC. Keep this on Off course.
And for the record the title made no sense so I opened it to see what it was, then realized it was something that was old and had been rehashed over and over on all the infamous slaughter thread.
When off topic was first made permanent it was warned that horse topics should not be posted on here.
Just saying.

Seems that some thought the Moderator would not be around, this being the start of the weekend

I guess the mods will move it if it’s inappropriately placed.

I would strongly suspect that the packer dude realized he was talking to an asshat who was trying to entrap him, so he pulled her leg a bunch and laid it on with a shovel. Or else it was written by Monty Python . . .

Kind of reminds me of a joke about a substandard barn near here:

Why is there no manure problem at X Farm? Ya gotta feed 'em to get manure . . .

Make sure you’re not clutching your pearls about a tall tale, willya?

Well my goodness, I owe you an apology since I didn’t know you had been promoted to Jr. Moderator.

And for the record, this is not the first horse topic inadvertently started in this forum. Sometimes people even start a non-horse thread in Off Course
the horror!!

Lighten up.

I don’t know why anyone’s panties are in a wad. If it’s true, it’s not really about slaughter, it’s about illegal and inhumane practices at a rendering plant I have nothing against rendering plants
I’ve used them. Without them, the cost of PTS for a horse would be much higher (if you choose to use their services).

I was just curious if anyone knew anything about them. That’s all.

It’s a nasty, nasty place.
And not just because it’s a slaughter plant/renderer [no clutched pearls here] but because it appears the workers/owners are sadistic meanie-heads.

If you’re going to render [a needed service indeed] you can still do it humanely.
This place has been noted as not being humane for quite a while.

Here, rendering plants are not slaughter plants, but separate business.

The rendering plant only handles deceased animals.
They will shoot your animal if it is still alive, but won’t be winched onto their truck unless it is dead, obviously and that is the only way they get any animals in their plant.
Maybe they have other regulations where he is?

I still find it strange, as told, wondering if there is more to the story, as it tends to be when animal rights extremist stories are involved, they being all about the drama, the more exaggerated, the better to incense people and get the interest and so the donations rolling in.
