Brazilian Olympic Showjumping team
Rodrigo has been pretty open with his criticism of how the preparations for the games and the Fifa World Cup were handled as well as the corruption in Brazil. I have to wonder if he pissed some of the wrong people off…
politics abound…

Wow… his statement was a little hard to read but I definitely feel bad for him.

Is it possible for him to get US citizenship and compete for us in 2020?

Very interesting indeed.

The plot thickens!

Noelle Floyd just posted this, a list of all horse/rider combos for the games. Rodrigo is not on it; Felipe is listed as the reserve.

Just want to bring it to your attention that Rodigo is listed as the reserve.

Rodrigo Pessoa/ Cadjanine Z reserve

They named 2 reserves. Pessoa said that he was putting his horse through quarantine to be ready in case they call him to get on the team, but that he would not be attending the games as a reserve. If he is not promoted before the beginning of the games, the other guy will be there as reserve.

The list was updated since I had originally potsed it.

Yikes! Wasn’t it GM who has beef with Richard Spooner about Olympic team selection. This seems like a terrible decision, but I must admit, I’m not a GM fan so I’m definitely biased.

With a history like his you earn respect and trust that when you say you’re ready, you’re ready. I understand missing him out if there’s a full field of talent, but placing someone with only a few top level competitions over him? Smells like politics.

I couldn’t find anything about Alain von Campdenhoudt and his statement regarding this. Could you post a link?

Also, I think GM blew it on this one. I’d rather have a well-seasoned former Olympic and World champion with a pretty damn good horse (they do have quite a winning history together) than a really good horse with an inexperienced rider. Four 5*s? That’s not a really good preparation for the Olympics.

George’s response is…vintage George. Love that commenters are having to correct gm on rps record. Hearing his justification being LA boule and falsteboro…its odd that those happen to be the only bigger shows doda has done since he returned to Europe.

I will say though we do love to watch Stephan lunge a horse at shows haha it involves some sweet lunge line shaking and lots of backing up.

I’m further inclined to side with Rodrigo on this one.

I’m inclined to side with Rodrigo as well, and a few of GM’s comments actually made me laugh a bit because he did not practice what he is currently preaching.

Also, wasn’t Frank Chapot the chef d’equipe for the '84 Olympics? (Sorry, this is pre-supershorty and I don’t know off the top of my head). Why is GM making comments about how he chose the team?

Just my opinion, but I don’t think Rodrigo has had a championship horse for quite some time. When was the last time he had a clear round?

Last Friday at Aachen in the 155. He was 8th. Please note Aachen is a much bigger show than either LA boule or falsterboro. GMs criteria seem chosen to suit his picks not the other way around.

It is interesting to revisit this (excellent) interview that Rodrigo gave to Phelps Sports at the end of February this year. Zoom about halfway down and he talks about his candidates for Rio. He lists Status, Pharaoh and Sans Souci Z as his backups for the injured Jordan. Cadjanine doesn’t seem to have entered into the planning at that time, although he must have done the paperwork to make her Brazilian last January.

Oh, duh, link: http://phelpssports.com/viewarticle.php?id=10014146

I have to say my biggest point of confusion is over the absense of zanotelli. I’m presuming that none of his horses from stephex have any percentage of Brazilian ownership because he really has had the most consistency of any of these guys over the past year or so.

And honestly I am less shocked by the inclusion of Stephan than I am by Rodrigo being named as alternate instead of doda who really hadnt done much this year at all until the nations cup at falsterboro. Which oddly was a retroactively named selection event for Morris…
Not Aachen like many other teams use.

Yes youre right about Marlon, but actually he works for Enda Carol (Ashford Farm) not Stephex. For me Stephan rides really good is a young man and for sure he will be part of the brazilian team a lot of times but he could start being a reserve this time, having this experience first and them become a really solid, prepared and not questioned international team member for games. One thing that nobody talks is that Stephan rides with and for Neco Pessoa
Rodrigo was the man who carried this team for the last 25y, and you pointed a very interesting thing about Doda´s performances and i am curious to see how he will perform as anchor of this GM´s team in front of his home crowd.

You are absolutely correct. I have a little Lorenzo de Luca on the brain.

Its quite funny because doda and gm had a rather hilarious falling out years ago and hadn’t spoken in years. But George is–and I apologize for the blaspheme-- such a weird old queen it doesn’t surprise me he chose the drama of doda right now.

Idiot Paul valiere was pestering necco this winter over whether he felt gm was “stealing his job” and of course neco wasn’t having that conversation.

Many of these guys have trained extensively with neco since childhood and really Stephan is a nice young guy. And really he has been showing more than doda this year.

Don’t know much about the Brazilian team but I must say that I think Quabri de L’Ile is the most beautiful horse I’ve ever seen! Noticed him at Pan Am last year.
