Breach of etiquette, justified or not

Background for my question…
There is a horse whose video I really liked. Contacted the trainer to see if the horse was still available. Trainer said yes she was, but that she had gone back home & been turned out. He would see if he could make arrangements for me to see her. This was on the 17th. Heard nothing back, so the 25th texted again to touch base & see if he had been able to work anything out. Still have heard nothing. I am trying to give the benefit of the doubt, holidays & a big futurity he is attending, but at least a “hey been busy” text doesn’t seem like too much to expect. I am planning on contacting him again on Monday.

Question is this - if I still hear nothing in a day or two, is it out of line to contact the owner directly?
Do I even need to contact him again?

I would just move on.

There’s your answer.
As to your “hey been busy” reply, if selling this horse was a huge priority, maybe you could expect this response.
If it isn’t… :woman_shrugging:

IIWM, unless I urgently needed to buy this horse, I’d wait at least a week before contacting trainer again.

I have considered that, but keep coming back to this mare. She has a couple of things going for her that I can’t get around if she’s still available.

  1. She hits most of the check boxes on my list plus a few of the wish I could get boxes.
  2. She isn’t halfway across the country from me…

All good reasons to pursue. I just tend to be skeptical of sellers, especially these days since it’s so easy to list a horse on social media. My mind goes straight to the unsavory reasons for ghosting you.

I don’t think there is an etiquette problem contacting the owner if their information was made available to you. It could be received poorly if you had to do a great deal of stalking to find the owners name and information.

Was not made available to ke directly, but it is on the horse’s papers. She has a Facebook account…

Well, it might piss off the trainer if you go around them to the horse owner. But as a horse owner, I would like to know if a trainer that I’ve enlisted to sell my horse is ignoring buyers.

I might text the trainer once more, but in that message say that you do have contact info for the seller and would be happy to reach out to them directly if the trainer is unavailble.

That may get you a quicker reply, especially if the trainer is ignoring potential buyers for a horse that an owner wants sold.

Don’t give up! Sometimes you have to keep reminding them. Why not contact the owner? I don’t see any harm in that.

Trainer blew it . Contact the owner and see what happens.

If that is the Reining Futurity, it will be over this evening.
That is the Christmas and Super Bowl of reining, so yes, trainers are super busy there right now. Still, a quick extra text letting you know when it expects to be back and on your query would be nice.

The reining world is very small, I would not go around a trainer unless clearly not responding.
Not sure you are there now, only you can tell.

It the horse isn’t at the trainer’s anymore, I’d contact the owner. I hate all the go through a trainer crap

I like this plan. Send the trainer a note reminding them that you are interested and ask if they would prefer you just contact the owner?

Possibly the horse has come up with an issue and trainer is buying time?
If you have seller info, I would contact them. I wish I had before I bought one last summer thru a trainer/ agent- I might have gotten the real story of why they were selling her.

Just to update - never heard back, cut the trainer out of the loop & talked to the owner. Going to look at the horse next week. Funny thing when I asked what she was asking for the horse, the number she told me she was asking is considerably less than the trainer had it listed for…

Not sorry I went around him.

Oooo as an owner I would be LIVID right now. What a jerk trainer.

Yep.

might want to send said trainer a certified letter with returned receipt stating due to their failure to follow through any real or perceived agreements are nullified

(adding a Return Receipt provides proof of delivery by requiring a signature from the person who accepts the delivery.)

Whatever payment the trainer may be entitled to would come from the seller, pursuant to whatever arrangement is between them. As the potential buyer, I wouldn’t worry about it.

I bought a horse in a similar situation; trainer had the horse for 90 days training during which time the horse was listed and didn’t sell. I followed up on the old ad, and the trainer said the horse was back with the owner and put us in touch to discuss directly. As it turned out the owner hauled the horse to trainers facility for me to try (better footing), and I did end up purchasing. I paid seller the agreed price and I assume trainer got some cut but that’s between them.

I have no relationship w/ the trainer that would require me to pay him anything. That’s between him & the owner.
