Breaking in new boots and how much do they drop?

I just bought a new pair of boots online. I bought a tall which I have bought in the past and these boots are just a little too tall. And the zipper is hitting the back of my leg and unzipping one of my boots.

This is the first time I have bought boots with zippers and I am not sure how much they drop compared to the pull on boots.

Should I return them and get a regular height or will they drop enough? The front of the boot is below my knee cap but its the back that is the problem.

My zippered boots didn’t drop much, if at all. However, my boots are not super soft, squishy leather. I would say maybe 1/8th of an inch, at most?

It really depends on the leather.

My La Mundials are really soft leather, and they actually dropped too much - they dropped about 2 inches. I’m looking into buying a new pair of boots because the LMs are too short. If you have boots with soft leather, they will drop quite a bit. The stiffer leather won’t drop as much.

My tredstones dropped about 1 inch but I bought a pair of Parlanti’s second hand and they did not drop at all. <3 my Parlanti’s

After wearing a few times in the house, and now a few shorter rides, my Ovation field boots (leather with a zipper on the back) have dropped about half an inch. I think they may go another 1/4 or 1/2 more.

My Ariat Heritage II’s aren’t super supple and they used to dig into the back of my knee too, bad. But they did drop about a half to three quarters of an inch. Suppler, high quality leather will have a tendancy to drop more I’ve found. I still oil/condition the shit out of the ankles cause they’re still kinda weird…and I’ve had these boots for years.

I have a pair of DeNiros and a pair of Tucci’s. Neither dropped more than 1/4 inch.

I just wore a brand new pair of boots all day long.

This was not a good decision.

However, they are fairly soft leather and have already dropped about 1/4". They are Sergio Grassos.

As stated the softer the leather the more they’ll drop. A well fitted, quality boot usually doesn’t drop more than 2cm(A little less than an inch). If you don’t use boot trees they will also fall more…sometimes to the point of dropping too much. I suggest until they do drop you put in a 1/2" heel lift which they should sell at your tack store. Make sure to bring your boots to check that the lift will work.
