I am having a heck of a time finding a breastplate that comfortably fits my cob!
He is HUGE through the chest, with a very low tied-in neck that is very deep from chest to crest. Add in a virtually nonexistent wither that starts back under where the front of the saddle sits AND and high-set neck, and you have a royal pain in the rear.
Cob size is too narrow in the chest, horse is way too long in the strap leading to the girth AND in the straps that connect to the dees.
I currently have a cob size HDR 5-point that fits at the five points, but is a few inches short through the actual chest straps, restricting his movement and not letting him put his head down without choking himself. I also have a 3-point hunt breastplate that was originally horse size but has had the middle strap shortened by almost two feet by a leatherworker, and has chifney bit clips to connect the rings to the dees of his saddle because leather straps just physically cannot be made short enough.
He needs a wither strap on a breastplate to lift the sides off of his big shoulders, so an elastic 3-point jumper style breastplate just doesn’t work for his body.
And of course, because he is so low tied-in in the neck that a straight breastcollar either digs into his throat or interferes with his shoulders.
Sigh. I’m thinking i’ll need to go custom, eh?
