Breastplates

I’m looking for a new breastplate as my mare is slightly bigger than my gelding and I hate moving the straps around. He goes in a Tory breastplate, with a snap at the girth, snaps to attach to the D rings, and a snap for the neck part so you don’t have to fool with straps and you don’t have to untie them when tacking up. He’s afraid of sheepskin and of things over his head so it works great for him, but I’d like something with at least the snaps for my mare. She’s also a bit chunkier so can go with something a bit wider.

I’d like something similar but in wider leather with maybe elastic. I can’t find a thing!

Just found this website while looking for a breastplate for my guy. They have lots of options and configurations.

… afraid of a loop of leather going over his head (reins, halter, bridle, flymask…)? Afraid of sheepskin? Whut?

At any rate, I’d get the breastplate you want and bring it to have a snap added at a leather place.

For some reason, the $5 bit of hardware (snaps on ends) always seems to come with an astronomical price increase. I just buy the breastplate I like and go to my local hardware store to put the snaps on myself. The snaps are $1.99-4.99 depending on size and metal (brass, nickel, etc).

I have one of this, and it may be what you’re looking for snap-wise -

I also have two of the older Dover elastic breastplates - I took an old flash attachment and put it through the O-rings at the withers to make a grab strap, and then put snaps on the straps that attach to the d-ring (saddle) and a large brass clip on the girth loop for easy on/off.

If you want wide leather, the company that makes Nunn Finner (Bartville Harness) has some very flat/wide strap goods. Might be worth giving them a call.

Those prices on that other website made my eyes pop - $230 for a standard breastplate?

He’s special? He’s afraid of the farrier and she shows up every 5 weeks for the last two years. He is deathly afraid of things that are white. Including his own boots and show pads. My trainer says as long as he jumps we accept his quirks.

I have the Dover one marked! I don’t see an option for sizes and I don’t ride anything over 14.2.

Anything here at Bit of Britain? They have so many: https://www.bitofbritain.com/breastplates?_q=breastplates&map=ft
I think the Nunn Finer ones can be ordered with modification, if not through Bit of Britain, then through Bartville Harness. At least it used to be that way!

My guy is a afraid of soap suds, but he’s saved my ass so many times that he gets whatever he wants.
