Breech that is like the Smartpak Piper but....
“knit” material basically means cheaper overall fabric. I mean quality, but probably also cheaper for them to buy in bulk and upsell as pipers… Knit fabrics catch/snag/tear incredibly easily.
I have the knit pipers with the silicone patches (the ones with the floral pattern, not the crazy colors) and the material is smooth and well made, like a thicker yoga pant. I love them. There’s a little pilling at the crotch after about 10 wears but nothing near what the old pipers did and they’re so comfy.

On the sizing, I would say that they run the same as the regular pipers, you might want to size down for a closer fit. I backordered the new colors I wanted but I prefer this fabric and waistband to the old ones and I think it’s more flattering.

I received the “modified” rise full seat pipers yesterday. I was SO looking forward to these .

The rise in the front may be a smidgen higher but the rise in the rear still leads to plumber’s crack :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

I give up. Sending them back. :frowning:

Thanks for the review. You saved me time and trouble!

Thank you so much for all of these reviews. I love low-rise pants and I’ve had my eyes on the Pipers for awhile.

As for the crack, well, even though my youngest is almost 6, I STILL wear the pregnancy belly bands simply to cover my butt with my low-rise pants.

I was not aware that one could make fabric any cheaper than that used in current Pipers, lol. The pilling is insane, hence the extra value of the full seats. I think they are fairly priced when on sale. But I can’t believe one needs to pay $85 for breeches with cloth not up to the job… and $100 more to get breeches that are well-cut and well-made.
I bought several pairs both full seat and knee patch. Colors are fantastic but I haven’t had good luck with the fabric either. The fit is a bit saggy in the crotch and I must wear a belt. I guess it depends on your build how they fit.

I’m glad I’m not the only one experiencing fabric fail. I don’t even wear them that much. I do like the back pockets and looking for breeches that have those back pockets. I know Pikur and Animo have them which are my favorite breeches but the price…

Maybe try the Ovation Euroweaves, OP. I just got a pair and really like them. They fit mid-rise on me but still have the Euroseat and other style attributes of currently popular breeches.

They just released a moderate rise version of Pipers–they seem to have a higher waist that would get rid of the gap/plumbers crack!
I was just going to say this - I just got a new catalog and it specifically points out that they listened to their customers and have modified the rise on the pipers.

Until you try them on. I don’t think they heard a word we said.
Seriously, I am smartpak’s biggest fan, but these are not what we asked for.

Everyone should try a pair for yourself. My opinion, they are the same as the original fit, the fabric also feels thinner and stretchy (not in a good way).

I picked up the new knit fabric ones:

and think they fit WAY better than the originals, not just with the rise, but overall . Sadly they don’t come in as many colours as the original fabric, but hopefully that will change.

Noted! Also I had replied without reading the page 2 replies and saw after the fact that someone had already ordered, received, and reviewed the modified rise.

Does anyone know if the side zip pipers are the same material, well really the feel as the show side zip pipers?
I have the show ones and its a thin stretchy material and online its says same make up but my older pair of pipers says the same make up but are thicker feeling…?

Do you mean the “Classic” side-zips or the newer ones? Because I have both the Show model and the Classic ones, and I don’t think the material is the same. The cut on them is the same, but the Classics are a bit of a heavier material, not quite as thick as the regular Pipers, but definitely a bit thicker and a little more cottony than the Shows. I actually quite like the Classic ones, and will probably try out the new modified rise style, since my problem with the originals was that they’re too low in the rise and end up falling off my hips–the Classics and the Show model are just a little bit higher and stay up on me.

No the side-zips in colors are not the same material/fit/feel as the show side-zips. The side zips are thicker material, and the cut is also slightly different. They fit different. IMO the show pipers are much tighter and have thinner material.

I found the fitting of the Pipers much the same as you guys with the gaping back. I tried the Horze Grand Prix breech that’s at a similar price point and I love them. They fit me well, a little long but I need a short so I just shrunk them by washing in hot water.

The horze grand prix fit well for a while, then they got this weird baggy spot under your butt. Very strange. I air dry them so not sure why it happened but now I won’t wear them.

The new dover “basic woven” breeches are A+, though not in so many cool colors. They were on special for $39 at Xmas and I bought three pairs and I wear them all the time.

I have 3 pairs of pipers and the very first pair I purchased (in a long) fit great. They don’t pull down, I don’t need a belt, etc. I then bought another pair in a regular by mistake. They feel like they don’t fit over my thighs (never had that happen before!) and they pull down in the back. So I bought a third pair in the longs again, while they fit in the thigh these pull down too.

It is so weird that my first pair fits awesome. I have always wondered if they changed the style after their very fist ones came out.

I just wear a belt and make sure to have a long shirt in the cold months!

I loved the piper breeches but sadly they did not work for me. They pilled up instantly on first wear. I cut the pills off and tried to wear them again and more pilling. I left the pills and they just got worst and worst until I knew they would create a hole after only a few rides. I sent them back and tried the full seat thinking they would be stronger. Same thing. Pilled like crazy. They asked me if I saddle soaps my saddle and I do. Not sure of this has anything to do with the pilling. But this is a soft french saddle. They just would not work for me. I bought some nicely designed tough riders and they are still gong strong over a year later. Absolutely no pilling!

They did change the fit not too long after first coming out with them. That might be the issue.
