Hi all! I am looking for some recommendations for breeches for curvier riders. I really struggle to find breeches that fit me well because I find most to be very straight cut through the waist and hip. I have a rather large backside and a pretty small waist and every pair of breeches I’ve bought recently to fit around my butt leaves me with a full handspan back gap behind the waist, which leads to the breeches sliding down as I walk around. I find riding in belts super uncomfortable and would love to find a brand that is cut larger in the hip/butt area and smaller in the waist, or SUPER STRETCHY so I could size down overall.
One word: alterations.
Buy breeches where you love the fit in the hips and thighs. Then go to your local seamstress and get the waistband taken in at the back. Custom fit. Most of these places are very reasonable. All the malls have one.
Have you tried the Buckwild breeches?
I have the exact same issue. The only breeches that fit me are the Ovation Taylored Breeches. I can get them in a 28" waist and they still fit great in the hips and butt. However, they are for hunters and do not come in white or black. The best white breeches for me are a pair of Chill Outs. They have enough stretch that I could get a small waist size. I looked at the Buckwilds, but after correspondence with them did not think they had enough difference between waist and thigh. You might want to check with them on that since I do not remember the specifics anymore. I need a minimum of 10" difference waist to hip and then extra room in the thighs. I will be following this thread for more ideas. Thanks for posting.
Pear-shaped rider here with a waist that is over 10 inches smaller than my hips. I also have heavy thighs and my calves it around 15" around.
Brands I’ve found that works well are Horz and FITS. FITS fit the best but Horz don’t cost an arm & a leg and fit well enough through the hips & thighs. I do find that some Horz styles gape at the waist but I love the Ellie style. Now to just find a version that has thigh pockets.
I’m size 24/26 but my hips are 10" bigger than my waist. The ones currently available I’ve found work best are Smartpak Hadley and Romfh champion.
If you’re interested, I reviewed them recently on my blog with pictures. http://trainingcupid.blogspot.com/2020/09/curvy-fit-breeches-romfh-champion-and.html?m=0
I second the Hadleys.
I might look into alterations if I can’t find a better brand, but unfortunately I live in an expensive west coast city and the handful of times I’ve taken clothes in for alterations it’s been pretty pricey! I would be willing to do that specifically for show breeches but maybe not for the ones I loaf around the barn in …
Definitely going to check these out!
Ariat Tri-Factors.
Tiny waist big booty here too. I’m also a 24/26 and I love Romphf but am having a hard time finding them currently. What’s your go to ?
While I don’t have a tiny waist, I do have hips for days. I like the Hadleys too. And there is one model of Ovations that I love. Can’t recall the name now though
Smartpak: https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/romfh-champion-full-seat-breech-12747
Also, the Romfh Isabella is the same cut just in a different fabric, and available with both silicone and suede seat. (But unfortunately more expensive at $189 - but you can find some discounted colors)
That’s probably the Ovation Taylored. I’m afraid they may be discontinued, or possibly only produced in the tan knee patch version currently.
What is the fabric like ? I don’t mind paying more at all. The champions I’ve bought in the last couple of months have been very thin and soft. And pilled in places after a gentle wash. Love the fit and I hate silicone.
another vote for Buckwild. They are fun, just the right amount of stick, not expensive, they have whites and tans, and IIRC they are on sale right now. https://www.buckwildbreeches.com/
Why oh why don’t they have knee patch breeches?
The last ones I bought were in October, and they were quite thick - substantial enough that I probably won’t be wearing them in the summer. It is a cotton poly blend, and almost feels like denim (but with some stretch).
I love the Ariat Tri-Factor. I also wear the Romfh Champion for shows, but I don’t love the waistband quite as much; I wish the rise was just slightly higher.
Lol the one thing I don’t like about the Champion is they’re too high for me! So I guess the Tri-Factor would be a no-go
