Breeches for Shadbelly . . .

Because I fox hunt, I need Canary (ideally) or buff breeches to wear with my Shadbelly on high hunting days. The low rise breeches do not meet the vest points. I knew dressage people wear Shadbelly coats and look splendid, but seems all the breeches are white —does anyone know where one might purchase HIGH WAISTED buff or Canary? Size is 32 . . .found a few on the web in UK, but sold out. (I can make them myself --I made my Shadbelly --but have not been successful finding fabric in the appropriate colors.) Can anyone help?? High waisted breeches, buff or Canary size 32 or 34 --any price . . .

You might want to cross-post in Hunter/Jumper - they also wear hunter shadbellies, and usually with tan breeches (is that close enough to buff?)

I think dressage folks are likely to only know of white breeches. Romfh Isabella is one that is high waisted, and available in some darker colors, but I don’t think there is anything like buff or canary.

I just saw some reasonably high waisted canary breeches I think at RideAway in the UK? I was shopping for Bridles so didn’t take too much note but I could have sworn I saw them…

I would also look at tailored sportsman they can a mid rise that is high .

Ordered a pair of breeches from RideAway --they look like they sit at the waist. If not, well, they were under $50 even with the shipping. Tentative happy dance!

Good luck!

Amira Equi carries several brands of breeches with (very) high waists. Cavallo Chagall and Pikeur Candela. Like you, I MUST have breeches that come up under the vest points. I loathe seeing photos of hunter riders in their shadbellies with their shirts poofing out between their vest points and their waistbands. Ugh!

Hope what you’ve ordered fills the bill!

At the hunt we call the too short Shadbelly the “Oreo Cookie look,” --the new Shad that I made has a 1/2 inch longer bodice coat, and a 1/2 inch longer vest points --so I do have one inch closer to the top of my breeches. I’d like a little “overlap” --to be correctly attired at the hunt club one must have cuffs showing 1/4 inch past sleeves so wearing any kind of shirt except traditional is difficult as most don’t have cuffs. And since I totally into fox hunting, I have cuff-links made of hunt buttons and that means French cuff riding shirt . . .again, not an easy item to find (I make mine). I so appreciate the help

Good Fellow, the best leather breeches around.

Islandhorsegirl-huntsman has leather breeches --although lovely to look at, they are not ideal for actual fox hunting in MI --when it rained, well, the leather breeches got really wet and sagged! His second complaint is they are not warm at all --in the wind they are down right chilly. But, as I said, lovely to look at!

I recall my white Good Fellow breeches had a synthetic seat so they could be washed in warmer water. Perhaps they could do a custom order?

I dug around their site and I think they will do champagne with the synthetic seat: http://shop.goodfellow-reithosen.de/…roduct&info=35

Islandhorsegirl --thank you for the suggestions! I am (or was because I ordered breeches from RideAway as suggested by Soloudinhere) --looking for Canary or buff colored breeches for formal hunt days at my hunt club. Only staff can wear white breeches (with red coats) and I think Champagne color would be too close to white.–members are expected by tradition to wear Canary --or buff. I need (or want) REALLY high waist breeches so that my Shadbelly (worn only on high hunting days) does not show “shirt” below the vest points. The low rise breeches are about two inches too short, the mid rise about an inch too short. I book marked the site for Cavallo Chagall in case the (incredibly low priced) breeches I ordered from RideAway are somehow not suitable.

Dressage riders who wear Shadbelly coats always look so lovely! We ladies of the hunt do our best too, but often fall sort of a sharp-looking yet appropriate turn out. Hunt clubs have actual RULES about everything from hair nets to lipstick, nail polish, perfume, length of stock tie, shirt cuffs, belts – and what one can and cannot carry in a sandwich case. FYI my handkerchief must folded just so an carried in my inside pocket of my jacket. But appropriate turn out is what makes fox hunting a stunning picture as riders and hounds blast around the hunt country . . .

The hunt takes its toll on our clothes --breeches are ripped open on tree branches (knee to thigh in my case --stock pin came in handy that day! Boots are worn out after a few seasons --although my coat is 40 years old --I’ve replaced two sleeves – daughter was wearing and took a fall requiring the coat to be (gasp) CUT OFF at the ER – as were her boots and breeches. She was fine --replacing her clothing cost more than the hospital bill.

I so appreciate everyone’s help in my quest! Thank you!

I have some Horze brand breeches - maybe the Active Rider, that I wear with my shadbelly because the waist is so long. They aren’t technically high waisted but if you get longs, they might work for you? I think they come in several colors.

Soloudinhere --my new breeches arrived from UK (less than $50 including shipping). They are lovely! Purchased from RideAway as you suggested. They are about an inch higher than my mid rise --I think that will be high enough --my Shadbelly is at the dry cleaners currently, so I will check when I get it back. If they are too short, it looks like the Cavallo suggested by Threefigs will be my next stop. Even if these breeches ARE too low rise for the Shad, they are lovely, a good price, and will be more than suitable on the hunt field with my hunt coat. Thank you for the tip on where to find them.

A word to the wise: Amira Equi takes forever to ship. It’s worth it to me because their prices, even shipped from Britain, are better than what I’ve found here in the US for the style of breeches I prefer.

ThreeFigs, Thank you for the head’s up! I was very impressed with RideAway --ordered on 2/28, arrived on 3/2 --tracked all the way from UK. Like magic!

I really like them. My stuff tends to be slower since they are actually free international over 200 pounds - so I ordered 2 bridles and a nose band and I suspect it will arrive very slowly. That’s fine. I’m glad you’re happy with what you got!

@Foxglove - good for you to search for a pair of breeches that can be worn with a shadbelly and not look like an Oreo (LOVE that)!. That combination of low-rise and shad - is there anything more ugly? Bravo again to you to go the extra mile and source the right thing. Lot of hunter riders do complain that they cannot find high-rise breeches. Way to set the standard! Please post on the h/j forum if you like what you got, maybe that can put an end to the ugliness of all that shirt on display…

Ok, hillary again --I will do that!
