Breeches for the not-plus-size curvier rider

I didn’t have an English saddle at all for a while, so I got rid of most of my breeches. I didn’t love any of them anyway.

I wear a 30 to 32, but am a bit curvier through the hips and derriere. A lot of breeches seem to be cut too straight for me. I have done a general search and found some options for full seat breeches, but I’d really prefer knee patch. The more budget friendly, the better, as in $100.00 or less. I could go up a little more, but I don’t ride enough and don’t show at all, so much more than that is just not justifiable for me.

I am fine with used, so if you have suggestions of pricier brands to look at, I can do some browsing for use styles as well.

I currently have two pair of Aztec Diamond Equestrian breeches that fit well enough and I like well enough. I really prefer for there to be some stretch/give in the waist, which these do not have.

I did just try a pair of Annie’s Equestrienne breeches last week, but they were ridiculously long. I am 5’6", but a regular length breech has never been too long. The inseam was 29". They were also strangely baggy in the calf, which has also never been an issue. They were nice breeches other wise though. The fabric may have bordered on slightly too thin for my liking in the thighs if I’m being really picky.

I have tried the SP Piper breeches, which I didn’t like. They were a bit straight in the hip and sagged in the crotch.

Not what you’re looking for, budget-wise, but:

I have the same problem and swear by Tailored Sportsman low-rise Trophy Hunters. I’m 5’2", and they end up a perfect mid-rise on me, with no gapping at the waist. I tried Tredstep breeches and like them very much on my curves, but they leave a couple of inches of waist gap that I’d have to have tailored out. Having breeches that actually fit has been worth having to haunt eBay to find affordable Trophy Hunters.

kerrits and tough riders fit me great - OP, you sound like me - i’m usually a 30 to 32 in most brands BUT i have a big tush and very wide hips - both of those fit me very well.

ariat has a few that fit nicely too, but i prefer stretchy material.

I have curves but am far from plus, at 118 lbs and 5’2". I just carry any excess that I do have, in the hips and thighs. I swear by the Ovations (about $90-100); the “Celebrity DX Euroweave” type. They are a little higher-waisted which keeps your shirt tucked in, but not up to your armpits. They wear like iron. And I have a great go-to thing for those breeches that have a little bit of a gap-waist but otherwise fit great: an elastic belt. Look on Amazon or wherever for a “braided elastic belt”. You’ll find them for about $8. If the breeches gap just a little when you sit on your horse, cinch up that belt a bit and the gap is closed. I love the Treadstep Symphony Rosa breeches ($119) for the curvy fit too, but they leave just a bit of a gap and this kind of belt is perfect.

I have 2 pairs of On Course breeches that I got on mega sale at Equus Now (like $30 each) that are surprisingly good for my large thighs/normal waist. They’re about a size too big for me in general - somewhere I read that they run small so I sized up to a 30, but 28 was the right answer - so they are now my sweatpants breeches because they’re so loose any comfy. Anyway, the proportions are curvy and they look pretty nice for the price. I also have a pair of Kerrits tights with the flow-rise business that fit well, but as I grow older I grow more and more wary of riding in tights. I save those for cold days under full chaps.

They have been discontinued, but the Ariat Pro-Circuits are perfect for a figure like yours. You can find them on ebay sometimes.

I wear a 28-30, more on the 30 side. I have a pair of the Aztec Diamonds as well, size 8 (which are now a little baggy on me) and I like the fit and feel a lot. I have a curvy shape as well, although shorter, at 5’2’’, 135 lbs. Based off of that, I like the Kerrits tights a lot, if you are into more technical feel. I get a size medium. They do not sag at all, which I have had a problem with on Tredstep and definitely Smartpak Pipers. But personally, I would rather them have more stretch and fit snug than heavier fabric that sags. And I agree about the Tailored Sportsman Trophy Hunters. I recently splurged on a new pair ($180) but I absolutely love the fit and they are my go to when I need to look nice and I have heard they last forever.

So, in summary, Aztec Diamond, Kerrits tights and Tailored Sportsman Trophy Hunters are what’s in my closet. Sold my Pipers, Tredstep.

I love these breeches, especially in the cranberry color. They are super comfortable and the fit is great for those with a little more junk in the trunk  lol.

I agree with evelynthemare in that the tredsteps didn’t really work for me either.

Good luck in the search, breeches are a pain!

Ovations and the horseware breeches are what fit me best (32 with a very narrow waist). The ovations are higher waisted but don’t gap or slide down on me. The horseware ones (I have the elise) have a lower waist but no gapping or trying to fall down and I find them very very comfortable (and surprisingly cool)

Love Tailored Sportsman. They all fit me but the low-rise Trophy Hunters are what I own. Room in the thighs and hips/butt and nicely in at the waist. I am curvy with a proportionally small waist.

I also have Ovations and I do need to belt them to keep them from sliding down my legs.

I too swear by Ovation breeches, particularly the euroweave side zip. They have ample room in the derriere and even the ones that saw “low rise”, really aren’t all that low. My only complain is that they come in just 3 colors.

Thank you so much for all of the helpful responses.

I have owned several pairs of the Ariat pro circuits and it is a shame that they were discontinued. My only issue with those is since the waist really didn’t have much give, there wasn’t a ton of extra room for my spare tire.

I am 5’6" and around 155. I’d likeep to be lighter, but unfortunately for me I like food more than I like the gym.

I tried the ADE breeches in the UK 12 at first and I could shimmy them over my hips, but I couldn’t button them. Since I was between the 14 and 16 I went up to the 16. They fit pretty well but I do have to pull them up when I get on.

I have tried the Tredstep breeches and I liked them but didn’t love them. Low rise typically do not work all that well for me.

I will have to look into some of the suggested brands and do a little shopping.

Thanks again!

I spent 3 hours at Dover Saturday trying on breeches. My waist is 28 and my hips are 39 and to top it off I am 5’9".
For schooling, you can’t beat the Tuff Riders. I have worn them for years.
I have TS, but the legs get baggy and Pikeur Ciarra (local shop went out of business so scored them for $80) and those fit nicely.
At Dover-Tredstep a “no”, waist too big and legs seem small, Ariat Heritage and Riding Sport didn’t fit either. Found an Ovation Taylored and they fit will be wearing them Saturday in a show. Got a pair of Romfhs on order. I tried on a pair and they fit nicely, but had to order the long. Will update after I wear them. If you don’t have to get longs, I think Tuff Rider makes a “TS” style breech that is reasonable.

I am 5’6", about 130 lbs, but have a very round tush and wider hips. I recently tried a pair of the Dublin Signature Euro Breech, and loved them!

I don’t have a butt but I have hips and a little waist - I like TuffRider, especially the ribbed ones. The Aerocools also work and look decent enough that you can show in them. Stay far, far from the SmartPak Pipers, as lovely as they are.

I am 5’6" and about 180lbs and I hold most my weight in my hips and butt. I wear the Piper breeches by SmartPak or any Ariat pairs. The fit nicely and they don’t cut into anything on me. I wear a 32/34. The SmartPak ones run big so I really only need a 32.

I like the look of Aztec Diamond…but limited size selection, everything is showing out of stock in their “leggings” department in M (and some only have XL or XS available).

ETA: I love Kerrits. I’m 5’4’’ and 130, and definitely more of a pear.

ADE breeches are nice. They have definitely gained a lot of popularity over the past several months. The new spring/summer line just came out, so that has added to it. From what I have read, the US is no longer exempt from paying VAT. So while $155 isn’t horrible for a pair of breeches, it’s more than I want to pay right now.

I do like the trophy hunters as well. I’m short waisted, and all hips/thighs. Seems I go from ribs to hips with little in between! I also have found some of the Equine Couture to fit REALLY well.

Good luck! I don’t know why breech shopping is always so difficult for most of us!
