Breed Name: Is it RPSI or Zweibrucker?

I’m registering my 2 year old with the USEA and USDF and under “breed” it allows for either Rheinland Pfalz-Saar or Zweibrucker. The RPSI website seems to refer to them as either Zweibrucker horses or Zweibrucken, but I usually see “RPSI filly” in ads.

Interestingly, there is no option for Rheinlander.

So, how would you register him?

It would be best to hear from someone from the RPSI to clarify, but I do live in Rheinland Pfalz not far from the border of Saarland, so I can at least say that the names Rheinland Pfalz and Saarland are the names of the German States where the breed registry originates.

Zweibruecken is the city (in Rheinland Pfalz) where the State Stud is. It was established by Herzog Christian IV. von Zweibrücken in 1755. As far as I know, this is why they horses are referred to as “Zweibrueckers” even though the registry name refers to the States.

Rheilanders are a different registry based near the border of Rheinland Pfalz and Nordrhein-Westfalen not far from Cologne in Moenchengladenbach.

It can definitely be confusing!

Let us know what they say… I almost always call mine RPSI filly/colt. It is easier. I have heard people call RPSI horses Rheilander more often than Zweibruecken. They probably do not know the difference and Rheilander is easier to say.

I believe that properly, you would refer to the horse as a Zweibreuker. Or say that it is RPSI registered.

Rheinlander is NOT proper, as that would refer to a horse that is registered with the Rheinlander registry - completely different registry.

Confusing

I was just doing a show entry for a breed class (USDF) and they didn’t have
Zweibreuker as an option, but listed “Rheinland Pfalz-Saar” as the class title.

Last year I asked Otto and I believe he told me she is technically a Zweibreuker (spell?) though. Try telling the vet tech to put that on the Coggins! I used to think explaining “Selle Francais” was bad.

Oh well.

Zweibruecker…

Otto told me Zweibruecker, however, I’d probably use RPSI personally…easier to say!

I need to send my USEF papers in, but first I need to figure out her durn registered name!!!

Update: It is confirmed the breed Zweibruecker with RPSI just being the registry. It’s like how sometimes you’ll see “AQHA gelding.”

And to clarify, I know that the Rhinelander breed is completely separate from the RPSI/Zweibruecker breed. I just thought it was interesting that there were two correct choices for Zweibruecken horses and no correct choice available for Rhinelanders.

The breed is named Zweibrücker (you would write Zweibruecker with UE) and the regristry’s name is RPSI.

The Rheinländer (rheinlaender with AE für those who have no ä on their keyboard like Siggi :stuck_out_tongue: ) is associated with the Westfalen breed/registry as a few things are done together to save costs. The name Rheinländer comes not from Rheinland-Pfalz which is one historic german area (now a state) but from the area called Rheinland around Cologne/Düsseldorf etc.
