Nobiz

Nobiz might be going!

Nobiz Like Shobiz’s owner Elizabeth Valando already has forked over $20,000 in pre-entry fees for the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and trainer Barclay Tagg said Friday morning it was likely the colt’s connections also would put up the additional $30,000 required to actually enter on Tuesday.

That had been no sure thing earlier in the week.

“We’re leaning toward going right now,” Tagg said. “We wanted to take a look at it and see.”

Also, Nobiz Like Shobiz’s rider for the last two races, Javier Castellano, already had accepted the mount on BC Mile runner Trippi’s Storm, whom Castellano rode to victory in the Kelso Handicap. Tagg had expressed some concern over finding another rider, but on Friday said he had secured the services of John Velazquez. Velazquez has never ridden Nobiz Like Shobiz, and Tagg said he was scheduled to work Nobiz Like Shobiz in his final BC breeze on Tuesday at Belmont.

Nobiz Like Shobiz was one of the leading Kentucky Derby contenders over the winter, and won the Wood Memorial Handicap in his final Derby prep, but in the big race itself he struggled home 10th. Tagg gave Nobiz Like Shobiz one more dirt start, a distant second-place finish to Any Given Saturday in the Dwyer Stakes, and then shifted his focus to grass racing.

“I just thought I’d see if he liked the turf because it might be a little bit easier on him,” said Tagg. “Once he couldn’t win the Derby, I didn’t see the point of pounding him on dirt.”

After Nobiz Like Shobiz’s four-length victory - perhaps his career-best race - in the Oct. 6 Jamaica Handicap, Tagg expressed an interest in going to the Hollywood Derby. But soon, he began mulling a run in the Mile.

“The Hollywood Derby is a really, really nice race, but even if you win it, you don’t get any accolades,” Tagg said. “The [Mile] started to look more and more interesting if we thought if we had a shot to win it.”

Interesting that Nobiz could be entered afterall. I’d prefer Javier Castellano in the irons if he did make his start in the BC Mile. Having him entered certainly adds a new wrinkle into the mix and a welcomed one at that. Without Shakespeare - the generally recognized top run in that division - the interest by the Nobiz Like Shobiz crew must’ve been boosted.

Kip Deville is also in there too

In a Bloodhorse NOW video, Pletcher admitted Wait A While doesnt like the soft ground and if it rains between now and next Saturday “We’ll have a decision to make”.

It was kind of funny-when asked what he thought of Dylan Thomas he said “my feelings certainly wouldn’t be hurt if he missed the plane”.

I guess it’s old news by now, but just in case, since it hasn’t been mentioned and is pretty significant news, Majestic Warrior is out-they discovered a split in the hoof wall-nothing serious, but they don’t want to push it.

Regarding the long shot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic:

ESPN Breeders Cup news

Tiago is viewed as a live longshot in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic following his win in last month’s Goodwood Stakes, so what does that make Awesome Gem, who lost to Tiago by a nose?

“We’re just flying under the radar,” Craig Dollase, who trains Awesome Gem, said Saturday morning from his barn at Hollywood Park. “I like it that way.”

Not sure how he’ll take to the shift from poly to dirt or the flight to New Jersey

Awesome Gem will be making his first start outside of California, but he has run well at all three Southern California tracks - Del Mar, Hollywood Park, and Santa Anita.

A friend of mine has a 1/2 sis to Awesome Gem so I’ll be rooting for him to do well.
This http://http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/editorial/article.cgi?id=9558 article (written by a good friend!) makes a case for Gem in the Clasic.

Does anybody know-when they ship horses around the world or at least to a significantly different time zone for these races, what do they do with feeding schedules? And wouldn’t you want to ship a lot sooner to acclimate?

Okay, let’s go out on a limb, having nothing to lose in cyberspace. You can bet only one horse in the BC Classic. Your pick is?

For me, Street Sense.

re: Breeders’ Cup picks

I’ll wait until the final field is determined

One wrinkle to the whole plan: Breeders’ Cup Saturday Could Be a Wet One

Which of the BCC runners has positive experience or even noted work in the slop? I suspect Hard Spun won’t be bothered one bit by it

Great question-one problem-Everybody has raced only ever on a fast track except SS first time out on sloppy and finished 3rd and LR over good, and won. hmm.

I don’t think it is going to be sloppy though-

Can somebody remind me-was it Dylan Thomas or Authorized who didn’t like firm Turf?

My “pick” is of course Street Sense. But I’ll have to wait to the draw and weather to actually eliminate emotions and use my head

If there is soft turf Pletcher said Wait A While will not run - she doesn’t take to anything less then firm. I wonder if Tagg would nix Nobiz for that same reason as he hasn’t run on anything but a firm grass surface. Kip Deville has run on less then perfect turf without issue.

Street Sense I suspect could handle some slop and/or a less then fast race dirt course. Heck Tiago is used to those “slow surfaces” out in Cali so maybe he’d feel right at home

Ok, how sweet is this?

Jingles to Happy the dog!

Egads - are we hearing a return of the most refuted yet some refuse to let go of the bumper theory of tight(er) turns - now with Monmouth? Don’t let Randy Moss hear that!

as cited on equidaily.com

Jessica Chapel/Railbird blog topic “The Tight Turns of Monmouth” does a great job of making anyone advancing that theory wrong

Bits and pieces from the position draw …

Dirt Cup Mile - Discreet Cat has position 1 which is the worst position he could have so really not good. Also skipping this race is Diamond Stripes (due to the potential for rain) so instead he’s racing in the Breeders’ Cup Classic - yikes.

Bessemer Trust BC Juvenile - War Pass is the Morning Line favorite at 5-2 in Position 2, which is very favorable. Old Man Buck is in this race instead of the Turf as Kenny McPeek toyed with.

Emirates Airlines BC Filly/Mare Turf - Morning Line favorite Nashoba’s Key in post 3 with 17-yr old Joe Talamo up, the youngest jockey ever in a BC race. She comes in with her record a perfect 7 for 7.

More bits and pieces from the position draw …

TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint - Morning line favorite at 2-1 is Midnight Lute breaking from position 2. Idiot Proof, with the track record, breaks from position 7 with ML odds of 10-1. In this race and also entered on Friday too (!) is Forefathers. No one thinks he’ll ride backt o back races … I’ve one seen that once a couple years ago

NetJets Breeders Cup Mile - Kip Deville breaks from position 8 and pegged with ML odds of 6 to 1 ; Nobiz Like Shobiz drew position 9 at odds of 8-1; Frankie Dettori is on Jeremy breaking from position 5. The ML favorite in this field is Excellent Art (GB) at 3-1 breaks from waaay out there at 13th position which is not good. (After Market is the second favorite.)

Emirates Airlines BC Distaff - Lady Joanne with Calvin Borel up breaks from position 5; Octave in position 8 is listed at 10-1; Indian Vale is ML favoriet at 3-1 with position 10; second ML favorite is position 4’s Ginger Punch

More bits and pieces from the position draw …

John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf - 6th position for English Channel at 5-2 (2nd favorite), America’s best hope of winning this one; Dylan Thomas (IRE) breaks from position 7 and is of course ML odds favorite at 7-5; Better Talk Now (sans a rabbit) at 8 yrs old is in position 3 with his 4th start in the BC Turf.

Breeders’ Cup Classic - field of 9 runners

Curlin takes position 4 with co-second favorite choice at 3-1; Hard Spun 8th position pegged with odds of 8-1; AGS lands in 3rd position with ML odds of 4-1; Lawyer Ron position 1 is tagged at ML favorite at 5-2, but that is a terrible position for him as he won’t relax in that spot; Street Sense position 2 and ML odds at 3-1 is co-second choice; George Washington breaking from position 5 with 20-1 odds; Tiago draws the outside at 9th place with 12-1 odds.

Not a lot of respect with the 8-1 odds for Hard Spun. From a betting perspective it is a great deal
