Breeders Cup News/Updates/Opinions

I had a dream last night about the BC Dirt Mile. (Don’t ask me why; I would have expected to dream about the Classic.) Anyhow, Discreet Cat did get a bad post position. He was in trouble most of the way. He finally got a lead in stretch but weakened approaching the wire, and he finished second as another horse came blasting past him on the outside to win by daylight. And the winner, who made such a great stretch move? Arazi.

You heard it here first, folks.

Um, where is Panty Raid? Crosses enters her and then runs her in neither?
And where is Globetrotter?

Poor Hard Spun. He should be lower than 8-1. It is a great deal betting-wise, but he deserves more respect than that. He is a good horse and so consistent.

Anyone else see footage of Street Sense’s final workout before the BCC? Whoa - it was beautiful. By comparison Hard Spun’s final effort at DelPark wasn’t unimpressive but he looked like a horse with a lot of mileage and deserving of that break after Saturday’s last race of the year.

Panty Raid stayed behind at Belmont. I’m not sure why. Globetrotter was left off the original cut of 12 for the Juvie Turf and Motion decided not to persue it, though with the defections, he would have gotten in. My guess is that he may point for the Laurel Futurity in a few weeks. Too bad, I like him alot.

I did, briefly, on a short BloodhorseNow clip. Yeah, Whoa is right. Breathtaking. Never seen him without dirt all over him in the stretch either

I wish I could have seen Hard Spun’s work.

So, Street Sense fans and critics-do you think they’ll want SS up closer like in his last couple of races, or drop him back like they used to?

I caught Hard Spun’s workout at DelPark on TVG - per them it was shot by two female fans at the track on digital video and then emailed to the show hosts.

Cited on the DRF was Tale of Ekati’s workout (‘Breeders’ Cup Juvenile’) which Barclay Tagg remarked words to the effect of it being waaaay too fast and not what they wanted to see.

What’s odd is that almost every horse that was cross entered with a declaration of preference, has gone to the OPPOSITE race. Among them, La Traviata, Diamond Stripes, Old Man Buck.

Double whammy for Tagg

Barclay Tagg later expressed displeasure with Nobiz’s post position (9), saying, “The outside isn’t a great place to be. I’m not going to scratch, but it’s a tough spot.” Tagg’s other Breeders’ Cup runner, Tale of Ekati in the Juvenile, also drew a tough post (10). “What can you do?” Tagg said. “I’ve got no choice.”

He didn’t even stop for Funny Cide

Here was the article: NTRA/DRF 10-22-07

Tale of Ekati worked alone, and was flying from the start. He was going so fast so soon that Tagg’s assistant, [Robin Smullen, maneuvered to the middle of the track near the finish line with her stable pony - Funny Cide - and placed her left hand high in the air, signaling Coa to slow down as soon as he turned into the stretch.

He never looked up.

“He was supposed to go in 48 and change, 49,” Tagg said. “I just wanted a little blowout, and then gallop out another eighth of a mile.”

Asked what he said to Coa after work, Tagg replied, “Can’t anyone do anything right anymore?”

Tal of Ekati went a half-mile in a sizzling 45.79 seconds

Does anyone know why Grasshopper isn’t running?

Does anyone know why Grasshopper isn’t running?[/QUOTE]

His loss on the September 22 in the Super Derby (G2) at Louisiana Downs to Going Ballistic showed he just isn’t on par with the balance of the Classic field entries. He looked taxed in that race and while he put in a huge effort at Saratoga conventional wisdom would say there is little benefit in overfacing him in the Breeders’ Cup.

Trainer Neil Howard on Oct 11th:

Grasshopper, second in the Travers Stakes and Super Derby, is “going to be given the rest of the season off,” trainer Neil Howard said Wednesday.

“We think he has a chance to be a really good horse next year,” Howard said.

For a different take, try the video on youtube.com of UK’s At The Races analysis of the BC Classic; totally different punting odds as listed by them!

As an aside, nothing personal, but Matt Chapman seems like a bad gameshow host with his style. Anyhow, other clips of their analysis to be found on youtube.com as well

BC Juvenille Fillies change

Cry and Catch Me out of Juvenile Fillies

Cry and Catch Me, winner of the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes at Santa Anita, was scratched out of Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies after developing a temperature, trainer Bob Baffert said Wednesday.

Where did you find that!? Love the hair  They make good points though. Thanks for sharing that tidbit.

The undercard if you will, on Saturday, of races 1-2-3 read like a who’s who of known runners before the 4th race which starts the BC Juvenille Fillies: names of note

Race 1, The Pegasus Stakes (G3): has Slew’s Tizzy, Helsinki, and Bwana Bull
Pace 2, Miss Woodford Stakes: has Silver Knockers
Race 3, Select Stakes: E Z Warrior, Cobalt Blue, and Buffalo Man

Both Buffalo Man and Cobalt Blue were knocked off this year’s Derby trail despite looking impressive just before injury. Merv Griffin owned the latter and Rick Pitino (and others) owned the former.

Oh, everything seems to find its way onto youtube.com I will put up a big red flag though on the segments as I don’t know when they were taped (they appear to have been uploaded yesterday) but some of the data is wrong. Example, Panty Raid was listed as being in the BC per their segment. Hmmmm

Funny Cide

Funny Cide must have calmed down quite a bit from his younger days if he’s a stable pony in his retirement. I remember all sorts of descriptions of him as being a handful to put it mildly. Still think that he lost himself the TC. Not jockey error or anybody else error, but horse simply too revved by nature for that race in front of that crowd.

Did not know this. Interesting that Xchanger opted for the dirt mile and the 3 you mentioned in Race 1 did not-that’s who X has been racing against. I wonder if HRTV will carry those races (I know, I am sure TVG is, but my cable is not so privledged!)
