Breeding a 16.2hh mare to a GRP... Anyone wants to share their experience?

Size wise… Anyone wants to share what they got (mature size) by breeding a 16.2hh (or so) mare (with all above 16hh pedigree at least in the first 2 or 3 generations) with a GRP (14.1 hh or so) of GRP pony lineage (in the 2-3 first generations) ? Did you got the size you wanted out of this mating? Did you got extremes? (like short legs on big barrel, etc.)

I bred a 16.1hh (Rubin Royal x Donnerhall) to my stallion, Burberry, and got a beautiful colt with nice bone, good body size, leggy, beautifulbhead and neck…the whole package. I would guess he will mature close to 15hh and he sold before he was weaned.

A friend bred a BIG OLD mare (17hh?) to Champion de Luxe. Haven’t seen the filly, but it sounds like she’s going to be in the 15.2hh range? Which is exactly what my friend was going for (was breeding for herself).

Ok so both of you got what you wanted in terms of size (middle of each parent’s size). We are wondering if we could have fair chances to get a 15-15.2hh sized horse by breeding our 16.2hh mare to a GRP of 14.1hh. I know, I know, nothing is 100% sure with genetics lol… So don’t lecture me on the "you might get the exact replicah of one or the other parent… " I am just not familiar with this kind of cross and I find that it is more and more popular as there IS a demand for ladies sized wb.

I know a lady who bred a 16.2hh old type warmblood mare to a 14.2hh stallion. Not a happy marriage. Looks to mature around the 15hh range which is what she wanted, but great big ugly head, short legs, long body. Frankenhorse.

Not exactly what you asked but I bred my 16.2h hanoverian mare to a 12h Section A Welsh pony. Resulting gelding just measured 1cm over 14.2h last month when we were trying to get measured for his permanent pony card. His feet were long as the farrier could not get to me the week of the show and he puffed up to the measuring stick…so I think with trimmed feet and training to the measuring stick he will be 14.2h. We have one more attempt next year for that card!

Conformation wise he looks like a “shrunken” warmblood with horse proportions…good length of leg and neck, very nice head. He does have a short back and straighter shoulder which came from the pony side of things. This had made saddle fitting a bit more difficult and extended gaits more limited than his full horse siblings. He is competing at Second Level, schooling all Third Level movements. He consistently wins against the big horses in a fairly competitive region (Region 1, locally NC). If all continues as is his rider will get her Bronze medal next year with him. He is 8 years old and has been exclusively ridden/ trained by an AA rider.

I bred my Wolkentanz I mare - who is 16h or a bit over… to Manchester City who i think is about 14.1?

What i wanted was a “middle sized” fancy dressage horse…

what i got was beyond my wildest expectations  my filly Luna, who is a little over 3 months old now… is fantastic… and my guess is she will be over 15h - maybe over 15.2 (time will tell)

she is the cutest thing ever - total pony look with long legs and a lovely head.

who knows what she will mature like but so far so good.

She scored premium at her Weser Ems inspection.

I bred my 14.1 half Arab mare to a 16.3 Old. and got a 15 hand mare. That mare since then has been approved by 2 registries for pony breeding and has produced 2 premium babies. She has a huge trot and pretty cantor and somewhere to go walk. I’m not a dressage rider, but ride the trails and she is my favorite trail horse.

Watching with interest for responses.

Planning on putting my pinto WB filly (should mature about 16.1hh) to Hilkens Black Delight (I think just over 14.1hh). Hoping for mid 15’s if we get a pregnancy.

In dreamland, a black Tobiano colt ???

I would say it is always better to breed like to like to avoid any odd sized parts

I have a really nice two year old gelding who is by dreamscape Farm’s Farscape, out of a section B welsh mare.
My guy is very well proportioned, leggy and looks like a small horse. He has horse gaits, and I am hoping he will stay 14.2 or under.
Even if he becomes a hony, he will be a nice, quality horse for a smaller rider.
