Breeding and the hot weather......

Looking to breed my mare in the coming weeks. Would have done it on the 30 day heat but we had a cyst to contend with. Now that’s been taken care of (I hope), we’re looking at short cycling her. BUT… the heat. It’s been in the mid to upper 90’s for weeks and there’s no end in sight.

I’m actually thinking about blowing off the rest of the year and starting early next year.

IF I go forward with an attempt this year, I have two doses to pick from. One Desperados, one Hohenstein. I’m thinking about trying 1/2 dose of Desperados, hope for the best, and calling it a season.

Thoughts? What would you do?

Not sure why the heat is a consideration. Horses naturally are long day cycling critters so normally breed in May/June/July and even into early August. The heat outside isn’t going to effect the environment for the embryo and the embryo isn’t going to be putting any real demands on the mare this early in the pregnancy. She would foal out in May/early June which would give her and the foal a summer of good pasture.

The other thing to think of is - if this is the weather you normally have now, do you want a very young foal in it? If so, that’s fine, just something to think about

It’s really not ‘normal’ to have mid 90’s in June. August yes. June no.

It’s the heat on the preggo mare I’m concerned about.

I hear ya - we have been having July/August weather the last couple of weeks :frowning:
