I have had 2 Fidertanz/DaCaprio foals. He shortened the back, lengthened the croup and added suspension to the movement. I did start with a very good mare, but both foals are huge improvements. Mine will probably mature a compact 16.1-16.2 (out of a 16.1 mare). It is a super cross and one I will definitely repeat again (and again…). The two year old is currently #1 in the country and the weanling was just Champion of her inspection.
Thanks for the info Eliza.
I know with this mare’s previous foals the first was long in the back but the second (by Goodtimes VDL) was very well proportioned. Her dam was long in the back so I want to keep that in mind while looking.
My F-line Hanoverian gelding has a good short back and is very elastic in the movements; so when I saw the Werther line in Fidertanz I was happy to see that line crossed on the Furioso line.
I would definitely not breed a 15.3 h Idocus mare to Fidertanz… Can you say pony breeding? Unless you’d be happy with a 15.3 hand offspring with a short back, don’t go there. There were other suggestions that offered a much better chance of improving size and I would consider those before going with Fidertanz.
Just my opinion…
Thanks for being honest Siegi. I am breeding for myself not as sale foals. Her last two foals finished at 17 hds and 16.2 so she has size hiding somewhere. However since I am not amazingly tall 15.3 is actually the perfect size for me I must say that this mare is a stout 15.3. She’s no Tinker Bell; she is more of a Helga! That’s something I don’t mind either.
I have two other stallions in mind Sir Donnerhall and Scuderia. Hanoverian lines I know well but the Dutch not so much. I know which Dutch lines I have enjoyed riding and which ones I don’t want to include in my herd. So this new breeding adventure with this mare has me coming to COTH to get good advice. I’m also talking with other breeders for advice.
It’s at times like this I look at my two geldings and wish they were mares. Oh to have a Picard or a Wummestern mare but instead they are geldings. Well they are good boys anyhow.
If your mare is stout, Fidertanz may not be the best choice. Both of my foals are more substantial than the (refined) mother. While my mare is not tall, she is light bodied and leggy. I don’t know that I would start with a substantial mare if I wanted to breed to Fidertanz…
^^^^^ This is true. All my Fidertanz offspring added quite a bit of substance to the mare.
Thanks everybody for posting. She is very old style. Her foal, now 9yrs, by Goodtimes is more modern and very well proportioned at 17 hds… I just don’t want one quite that big for my personal riding horse.
I will take fidertanz off the list.
Now to call and find more info about Scuderia. I was able to watch Hengststation Pape’s foal show in June and see most of the Scuderia foals presented that day. I just have to see if it is a suitable cross for my mare. Thanks again I really appreciate the advice.
Just as a side note her dam’s sire’s (Bolivar) sire is Saluut; and that’s who she looks like. Actually between Idocus and Bolivar she has a good deal of Holsteiner in her lines. She looks more like a Holsteiner than the modern Dutch horse.
Where have you been able to find frozen for Scuderia? I also really like him but haven’t been able to locate frozen.
The Hassler’s are the only ones in the US that have frozen for Scuderia right now.
Here is the link.
