Bridle/headstall problem

Hi all! I was wondering if it’s ok to add gator snaps or quick release snaps to my bridle? The bridle I have now the leather on the cheek straps are too thick for the rings on my bit, so when I pull the reins the cheek strap twists which ever way I’m pulling.

I know it’s not because of the bridle not being broke in I’ve used the bridle many times before just not with the bit I have now. I can’t afford to buy another bit or bridle at the moment and have to use what I have. The gator snaps are around fifty cents at the tack shop.

Please let me know if it’s safe to do this or if there is an alternative to fixing the issue Thanks!

It’s fine. But I would use a snap like is on halters rather than scissor snaps.

Thank you!

I just realized that I put quick release snaps when I meant quick change snaps. That was an oops on my part.

Is there any suggestions on size or brand of the snaps that would be best to use?

Nope. Just take the bridle with you to make sure the cheek piece will easily slide through and they aren’t wimpy little things that could fail and that there’s nothing to rub the horse… We all have to make do sometimes. Nobody whose actually had horses for any length of time will judge…be amazed what you can do with baling twine or wire in a pinch.

Come to think of it, they do make snaps for attaching bits to bridles and reins, maybe you could look through some of the catalogues online for a longer term fix.

Thank you I didn’t think about bringing my bridle with me, that probably will be a time saver. I’ll chat with the owner of the tack shop to get the correct snaps.
