I saw an older thread from over a decade ago, and would love some new recommendations.
I have a broodmare due next spring, and am open to moving her as soon as possible to get her settled before winter. I would love to keep her & the baby there through next fall, though possibly keep the baby there longer if it were a good fit (i.e., a year or more).
The perfect place would:
- Have excellent care (naturally). Quality care is more important than fancy.
- Have experience foaling out, but its no problem for me to send her elsewhere for foaling if preferred.
- Have experience handling and raising babies.
- Have good turnout suitable for pregnant mares, and then mare + foal (mare is good in small group turnout).
- Be within 1 hour or so of Gaithersburg, MD (very negotiable if the care is excellent).
Good care is more important than distance. Open to vet-run facilities, or barns that used to breed but may be slowing down now. Also open to breed-leasing her next year if the barn were interested (she’s a proven FEI dressage horse, and caught on our first try - so far she makes breeding look easy!).
So far, I’ve gotten a lot of suggestions for smaller breeders that don’t have space for client horses. I know this barn exists, I just don’t know that many breeders and word of mouth has proven challenging!
Any leads are appreciated!
