Hello. I’m out of the loop on what some things cost currently in the equine market. Long story short we breed Arabian sport horses and have some mares we would like to make available for a breeding lease. What is an average rate for the lease of a broodmare?
thank you .
Free to a couple of thousand around here unless it’s a champion or has produced solid competition offspring, too general a question to narrow down and very dependent on the mares record as a producer. Or how bad the owner wants them off the books for a year.
Yes, I realized it was broad .so how about how to determine the amount to place on the mare for the lease? A percentage of what the sale price would be? Etc. I’m trying to figure the best way to be fair across the board.
sorry, I hate the money end of the business .
Most broodmares lease for free. I would ask that the mares be insured. Are these Arabian or warmblood mares?
Most Arabian broodmare leases I have were free upkeep leases. One top mare was 1k on top of that. All the Arab babies I made I lost money on once all was said and done, difficult to profit on the sporthorse side. Good thing I am proud of my babies!!!
I’d consider it a deal to get a free broodmare lease for my horse…costs and insurance for a couple of yeas adds up.
The 1/3 of market value is a starting place for leasing a horse to use. Not applicable for renting the uterus.
Thanks for your input.
Would someone explain how a free lease benefits the owner when upkeep on the mare is almost nothing for the owner? Why would I let someone get a foal off my mare for nearly free? I would expect insurance, etc. I’ve been made to feel unreasonable when I pose this question! Thanks
My mare does not cost me next to nothing between board, farrier, vet and training. I do not know anyone who would lease out a horse for breeding without the leasee carrying insurance.
You maybe getting the responses you get because you are assuming everyone pays minimal costs to keep their horse.
Also, it’s not free since breeding is often more expensive than buying a foal. With that, I would love to breed my mare. However, it’s expensive, I have no clue what kind of foal she will produce since she’s never been bred, so if someone (and I have had offers) wants to be the first, maybe the resulting foal will make it worth my while to breed that’s better for me IMO.
I presume sakebu owns her own property. I don’t so my mare is NOT next to free to keep, and my friend has her on a free breeding lease that benefits me immensely both psychologically and financially. Not paying is a financial benefit; not having to sell is an emotional one.
Often the owner HAS to get the mare off their books or they’d ante up a stud fee and breed it themselves. Cheap or expensive upkeep, they can’t afford it, the breeding costs, the vet bills and it just sits around and eats. If it’s not a particularly successful producer of a popular breed and type, very few will pay anything for it and free at least cuts the losses.
It is customary to require insurance and a good contract whether free or there’s a lease fee.
OP here has a limited market with what sounds like half Arabian mares. Only those wanting to breed similar size and type would be interested. Even then, unless they are Champions at major shows or produced one, very shallow, specialized market that I suspect is very localized. None around here and there’s a lot of horses of different discipline and type around here.
Lease will usually be free with the leasee paying insurance, farrier, vet and maitenance. Be very careful who you send the mares to. Lots of bad stories.
