Brush rec's for GSD...

Standard short coat GSD. I have one of those shedding tools that is basically a huge clipper blade with a handle, and a slicker brush. I don’t like the slicker, it seems to leave behind almost as much as it picks up, and old doggo thinks it tickles a bit too much. He’s 8, so you’d think I’d have figured out the best grooming tools for him by now, but what can I say. The de-shedder is magic during coat blowing seasons, but not made for daily brushing. What’s your go-to brush for everyday, non-shedding season?

Picture of Best Dog Ever for reference.

Twinco Slicker- gets all loose hair and does a great job. Not all slickers are equal but Twinco I’ve used for 25-30 yrs for many different breeds and now for my GSD.

Hmmm…Perhaps I just need a better slicker. I saw the other day that they have ones now with plastic-tipped ends, maybe that wouldn’t be so offensive.

The key with most dogs is you need at least one tool to reach their skin; I like a plain metal comb but there are a lot of mat combs for double coated dogs that might work better (mine is a single coated breed.) I also have an undercoat rake that I use on my mini horse but it’s a dog tool.

A lot of slicker brushes have teeth too short to get through all of the coat (plus a lot of dogs find them too sharp.)

So maybe a pin brush, mat comb, undercoat rake or metal comb, and use together with a slicker brush or a softer brush to pick up other loose hairs on the top coat.

I use a metal comb to loosen and get the undercoat as well as capture those loose hairs on top. They are a challenge with so much hair - I have 4.

All slickers are definitely not created equal. I had one so sharp I cut myself on it - no wonder my dog (Port. Water Dog, wavy coat) hated it. Got a doggyman at her breeder’s suggestion and it’s much nicer. I tried one with plastic balls on the ends, and it didn’t go through her coat at all. Might be better for a GSD.

I also have one of these (albeit smaller sized) for removing dead undercoat - http://marsgroomingproducts.com.au/pet-grooming-products/coat-king/mars-coat-king-18-blade-double-wide .

(oooh, tried to respond and it was unapproved! Something risque in the links to brushes, I guess. Ok then)

I thought all slickers were created equal til I got a doggyman slicker at my dog’s breeder’s recommendation, and it’s night and day better. Much less sharp, but still goes all the way through her coat (she’s a PWD, wavy, with a pretty long jacket these days). I also have a Mars coat king undercoat rake to pull out the dead hair that gets trapped in her waves. Wish I’d had that for my GSD mutt.

I’ve tried a slicker with plastic balls on the ends, and it was terrible - wouldn’t go through her coat.

Thanks, I will check that one out. He’s not super hairy or thick coated, thankfully, the one we have just seemed to be super inefficient at actually removing the loose hair.

See # 24 in this link in first listing. This is the one I’ve used for 25-30 years. Was great for poodles, Bischons and now

GSD. Does not hurt the dog but gets down to the skin. And has lasted a long time. This is exactly like mine that was branded a Twinco.

PS The Twinco slicker was the one used and recommended for years by dog show folks. It was the gold standard of slickers for a reason.
