Does anyone know the calories per lb are in buckeye gronwin? Can’t find it on there site but did send a message. If anyone just happens to know that would be great.
It used to be about 1300 calories per lb, but they’ve changed the formulation a tiny bit since I heard that number. Not sure if it’s still accurate.
1300 is about average for most RBs, and it’s a safe enough number to use. It’s not going to be 1500, not going to be 1100, so you’re safe.
It is 1300. Was talking to my vet about feed because my boy is tubby and is currently on gronwin. She likes purina enrich plus but did not know calories off hand. They both have 1300.
Yes, all the RBs are in the calorie range. I think a couple are closer to 1200, I think there’s one that’s closer to 1500, but the vast majority are 1300 give or take 50-100 cal.
My tubby, 16.2h warmblood can’t even get a full 1lb serving of Gro N Win a day without becoming a blimp. We had the same issue with every brand of ration balancer I’ve ever used.
So she only gets 0.5lb/day and still stays shiny and covered in dapples with good feet.
She actually got FATTER when I tried a vit/min supplement in alfalfa pellets, go figure. I think she just gets more than enough nutrition from her forage and really doesn’t need any supplementation from me.
I bet it’s the soy, because it’s just not enough calories to blimp out a horse

How much alf pellets were you using? I only use about 1c, which is about 300 cal for the pellets I use (where it takes about 3c to get to a pound).
One can also use a couple/3 cups beet pulp. The shreds I can get are about 9c/lb, so 3c is still in the 300 cal range, and the volume is much more after adding couple cups water, which makes it really easy to hide a v/m supplement and the additions I use (Nutramino, vit e, cu/zn)

I bet the same thing about the soy and I bet wrong. I had her 100% soy free for over a year and she was at her very fattest. She was getting the same “volume” of alfalfa pellets with her vit/mins, which is about 1/2 a cup AM and PM, which is less than half a pound in weight.
My take on what I’ve observed with my own horse with my own eyes is that she is extremely efficient at getting what she needs from her forage. She doesn’t need a lot of extra supplementation. She does seem to benefit from the added protein in the ration balancer when she gets it in a small amount. Even with amino acid supplementation her top line looked like garbage on a just a vit/min supplement.
