Bud goes to Summer Camp

Well I have finally had enough of putting my poor horse through this insufferable heat. I sent Bud to Summer Camp in San Diego. As some may know, he suffers with anhydrosis, the inability of his body to produce enough sweat to cool him when really hot.

This is his third summer and I thought he was doing better. I have had him on OneAC year round and it did help. That is until last Monday when the temperatures soared between 105 and 110 degrees and the humidity went through the roof. Poor guy is standing in the shade, in his stall, under his huge fan and looked as if he had just run the Derby. Flanks heaving, nostrils the size of dinner plates, well maybe not that large, but…not comfortable.

I immediately called a friend in the East County Area to see if she had room for him. Thank God she did. Yesterday I packed his little bags, loaded him up at 5:30am to beat the heat and get the heck out of the desert and off we went.

He looked so happy, like, “Thanks Mom, I can do this!!!”. I figure he will be at camp until the end of September. I would miss him if I could ride at all, but during this heat all I do is go to the barn at 2:00pm (lunch hour) and again at 6:00p on my way home and hose him down to cool him. I can go to San Diego (2 1/2 hrs away) once in awhile and ride. What a novel idea. And I know he is in EXCELLENT care and very comfy.

What more could a Mother ask for???

“The older I get, the better I used to be.”

I know you will miss him, but that is such a wonderful thing for you to do for your loyal friend!!
Thumbs up to you Cactuskate!!!
