Budget/Price for 1/2 lease or full lease (Los Angeles)

I’m in LA and my full lease was the below -

$865 board
$700 full training (3 lessons a week)
$450 grooming (turnout and tackup even though I enjoyed doing it myself)
$500 lease fee

  • responsibility for farrier $325 every 5 weeks, dental work and whatever else sprang up.

OP, as you can see, it can vary wildly. I’d have a chat with the horse owner and make sure you’re both on the same page regarding what the horse can do, and what the owner is willing to let you do with the horse.

That said, it’s possible that everything will be fine. But please, please, get a contract. Put all your agreements (do you need to take lessons? how many? can you show the horse? what’s the max height? what happens if the horse gets injured while/as a result of your riding it? etc) into a document and have both parties sign. It may save you heartache (and $$$$) down the road.

I like your responses here. I’m a veteran rider (hunter jumper, polo and all around pleasure)and I just went back to riding about 10 years ago…… Polo, borrowing peoples horses in Malibu and brentwood/sullivan and schooling /polo at Will Rogers. Now I want my own. I’ve been looking and looking and the only horse I’ve found is a $150k “biter”. Perfect in every other way, but no dangerous habits for me. I also want to keep him/her in Sullivan so if I find one outside of there, I want to move him/her

I’ve been out of the circuit for so long it’s hard to befriend the right people and the fancy barns seem so like used car salesmen I don’t totally trust, but I have a trainer who is helping but she’s very busy herself. I found my horses so much easier when I lived in Old Agoura, kept them on my property and rode at pony club. My trainer says “oh it’s so different now”. Any advice? Should I go hang out at fox field and Linwood I’m heading the the Calabasas saddlery today (my happy place). Thanks for whatever advice you want to throw my way Terre

Where are you? I want the same but I live on the Westside.

I think you’re talking brentwood. I grew up riding there 30+ years ago and came back recently after living in Old Agoura and have been testing horses for a full lease only. Have not found one I bonded with yet. But only tried two

If you know anyone, send them my way. I already have a stall and will join the rings (trying to not use names here). I know the prices but I wish to ride 20 minutes from home. I’m used to having my horses on my property so boarding is new (and expensive) but it’s the way it’s going to be for me. Thanks for anything advice etc you can offer
