BUGS in kibble!

I just discovered those little flour meal bugs in all the open bags of dog food. Okay, I guess you’re supposed to transfer them to sealable containers.

In the meantime, is it okay to go ahead and feed them that kibble?

These are animals that routinely kill and eat bugs, one eats poop every day, and one ate an entire gopher in front of my husband.

I really wouldn’t feed it, but that’s just me. Sealable containers would have just confined the pest to the container, the bugs most likely were already in the dogfood when you brought it home. If you freeze the food it will kill all the bugs and possibly the eggs and larvae too.
Pantry pests are very common in dog & cat food which isn’t held to the same standards as people food. If you keep your pet food in the kitchen near where you keep your people food you could have a serious pantry pest problem in your kitchen by now. This is one reason why as a former professional pest control person I always advise people no to store their pet food in the kitchen.

well, it’s protein.

The only problem with those bugs is that they get into other stuff as well, and really easy like.
And they are a pain to get rid off.

So yes, I am pretty sure you can still feed it. Depending on how much is left and what you are feeding, I’d be tempted to throw it out though to curb contamination of the rest of the food articles in the pantry.

Pet foods are notorious for carrying those bugs. Sadly…

Doing a big clean out and noticing that the ones in the greasy kibble appear to be dead, while the ones in the dry Milk Bone are alive.

put kibble in freezer for 24 hours… it kills the bugs.

I just went out and bought some Iris Airtight Pet Food Containers. Now I can’t believe we did without them for so long. Thanks for the freezer tip. According to the dogs, the cold didn’t seem to affect the taste any.
