Bully Sticks - why didn't anyone tell me??!!

They are most steer ones.
Not enough male cattle are left as bulls, to have as many bully sticks out there as they sell.

English is a strange language - while bringing in new words, it keeps the old words as well.

ā€œPizzleā€ is the Old English word for penis - it is probably originally of German (Saxon?) origin
Well that blows my penis/swizzle stick mash-up theory out of the water! I just pulled that out of my rear anyway

Gotta love COTH, learn something new every day.

We have a strange custom on the weekly staff meeting I sit in on…someone has to come up with an idiom or an interesting language thing and explain the origin. My turn next week…think I might pull out the ā€œpizzleā€ bit ;). There is a German speaker on the call, so maybe he’d appreciate it? We’ve said no more horse idioms, so switching to cows will work!

My thoughts exactly! If cattle are being slaughtered for hamburger, I feel much better that every bit is being used…and penis dog treats are a pretty creative use of a part not generally deemed edible by Americans.

I have a question, though…are they really always bull penises or do they use the ones from steer too?
They use all of them, I think it is great, the bigger ones last a good long time for my strong jawed Lab. There are also water buffalo pizzle sticks and of course buffalo ( hence the bigger ones I assume). They do have a strong odor but I have not found it to stain anything. I really like them as chews, no parts to choke on, they digest well, I have never had a dog have gas from them. So count me in no matter what they are called.

I thought it looked like dried penis. I asked the store clerk but he insisted it wasn’t, that it was dried tendons. I’ll have to speak to him about that.

Some of them are dried tendons. I started reading ingredients and I guess they are so popular there aren’t enough ā€œpizzlesā€ to go around so a tendon makes a good substitute! Lots more tendons per steer than pizzles!!

you can buy tendons, too, but they aren’t bully sticks and shouldn’t be labelled as such, nor do they quite look the same. One of my dogs much prefers the tendons over the pizzles, and vice versus.

-you can buy fresh or frozen beef tendons and beef penis at some ethnic grocery stores. Apparently they both have uses in soups or something.

Are bully sticks a choke hazard?

How safe are the bully sticks for dogs that tend to swallow whole portions of rawhides, choke and require going to the afterhours vet clinic and for an expensive endo$copy to remove?

The gang bangers really love chew treats but I don’t want to risk another choke hazard. I’ve banned all rawhides, piggy chews and nylabones that they could choke on…I am afraid to try antlers should Tigger, the most expensive rescue in the history of the world, decide to swallow it!

GAD!! I live in the heart of cattle/beef country and I never heard of a pizzle/bully stick!! Maybe the term ā€œpizzleā€ came from what the bull did with it BEFORE it became a dog toy!!! I’m not sure I could handle the sight of my dogs playing tug or war or chewing on one!!! Ropes are good!!

You should see what they look like after your pooch leaves one out in the rain…
