Bumper-pull trailer & bad back. Help!

My bumper pull trailer’s jack is killing my bad back. The jack itself is only about 2 years old and not as stiff as others I’ve had. The problem is the bent-over stance I have to take while cranking it.

I would totally invest in an electric jack but feedback from a reliable horse trailer place is that they are more trouble than they are worth because you have to keep them charged. I board my horse, my trailer gets parked out in the open … I suppose I could also buy a battery-charger and keep it there, but it would be hard to keep track of.

Any advice??

Could you put something on the handle to make it longer? Or just squat down or sit on a bucket to do it?

Get an extra battery, keep it charged at home, swap batteries out periodically?

My friend got the electric jack for her gooseneck. She loves it. Keep us updated as to what you do and if you like it. I hate hitching and unhitching my bumper pull trailer.

Have you investigated getting a “taller” jack that lets you crank in a more upright position?

I have an electric jack for my bumper pull trailer. It plugs into my truck plug and runs off that battery. I LUV it!!! E-mail Rissa at Happy Trails. I am sure she can sell you the same kind of jack.

Do they make foot-jacks? I had the same problem with my bicycle pump, and got one that you use your foot to pump with instead.

My local Camping World said they can put an electric jack on it. I think part of the problem is the crank goes parallel to the ground (towards me & away from me) so I really have to lean over. On my old trailer, the crank went up & down and even though it was old & stiff as hell, it was more ergonomic.

I have an electric jack on my larger LQ trailer, and I just plug into my truck and the truck powers the electric. Absolutely love it and would not be without it!

I would have it done any place but Camper World! Find a competent local trailer shop and I would be they are less expensive than Camper World!

We also have an electric jack on our bumper pull trailer. It plugs into the plug on the back of the truck for the power. Ours is over 23 years old and still going strong. Love it!

I had an electric jack for years on my 4 horse gooseneck, never ever did the battery go dead

Make sure you have a really tall block under the jack, so you have an absolutely minimal distance to do any jacking…electric or otherwise!

Hi All! ( Hi SusanO!)
it your current trailer has a bolt on A frame jack then you are in luck! Get an electric jack and do not have it hard wired in to a battery, as SusanO wrote you just plug it into the truck then unplug when done and plug in your trailer… There should also be a manual over ride crank on the unit, there are many brands to choose from… try this

YOu can easily change your present jack to one like your old jack. Three bolts and it’s done.

Purchase it here …

Thanks everyone. I ended up with an appt at an actual horse trailer place, only because Camping World was so freaking impossible to deal with. This place is more expensive than anyone, but also they could get me an appt in a reasonable amt of time, and they can also take care of a few misc items like loose trim, etc.

Thanks hosspuller but at this point with my back, I’m afraid to try. I’m just lucky I can ride and run and stay reasonably active.

How does this work when you have a weight distribution hitch on your BP.? Looks like there wouldn’t be enough room for all the equipment?
Also my trailer lives outsides . Anyone have one of these that stays out on the wether. I know they sell a plastic cover but my trailer is totally exposed to weather.

I have a weight distribution hitch. It fits behind the “foot?” next to the trailer. My trailer is parked under a shelter so I don’t know about rain affecting the motor on the jack.

Hi,
works just fine, it fits in same center hole and same 3 bolt holes as common on a standard jack on an A FRAME tongue, put a jack cover on if you would like but it has a hard cover on it, with a WD hitch it is very common on bumper pull campers as well

We have a weight distribution hitch and the jack doesn’t interfere with it.

Our electrical jack has been out in the weather for 23 years and still works fine.
