Bumps Along the Spine

Hey COTH! A friend of mine’s mare has developed some odd bumps along her spine. The mare has had them for several months, but they recently became even more prominent and now her spine seems a bit crooked. I’ve attached pictures at the bottom. The top is from this summer and the bottom is from this week. My friend is going to have the vet come to examine her but wanted to know if anyone had seen something like this previously.

Some quick backstory, my friend, “Alice”, leased her mare out for a year. She got her horse back in less-than-ideal condition. Mare was ridden in ill-fitting saddles during the lease, so she was very sore, in addition to being underweight and under-muscled. Alice had a vet come out to examine Mare; the vet cleared Mare for riding (light riding until she regained condition). Still, Alice hasn’t ridden Mare since as Mare still doesn’t seem comfortable. Alice just takes her for 20-40 minute walks on nearby trails.

For ‘lumps on the back’ I was going to suggest warbles, but wouldn’t they have emerged by now, if that started in the summer?

Are the bumps soft or hard? What does the vet say?

My horse had something a little like that, but they were along side the spine. They were caused by a saddle that created pressure and friction on the placves he bumps developed. Took me almost a year to make them go away.

They look like friction bumps from a shoddy saddle, flocking was probably bunched and lumpy.
